Making bases of Wills sheets?
« on: 30 April 2011, 11:13:23 AM »
I am planning a terrain board where I will use a lot of York Stone Wills sheets. I am considering to base the figures to be used on the same material. Any experience out there of cutting Wills plastic shets into bases?

Hmm, I would cut it out, file it to fit an existing base, then cast it. We are making our own bases at the moment, and it works like a charm.

Or... try out Fenris Games bases, they are very nice. We are using those as well. They have beutiful flagstone bases (along with most other types, cobblestone etc).

The Wills sheets are great but rather thick. Do what Galland suggests and make one or two and cast the rest, otherwise you'll go through a lot of knife blades and swear words before you're finished  lol

Thanks for your comments! Casting....hmm...how would you do that? I was more thinking of the swear word approach. I do not want the thick kind of "raised" bases but rather the same thickness as washers. Since Wills is only 1 mm thick they would be perfect. I was hoping there was some hand tool which could be used to punch out round 25mm bases with. Another option would be to cut them individually to fit the form of each miniature.  :?

You can get circle cutters from most art and craft shops but you do have to take your time with it to get a decent cut as the plastic they are made out of is rather flimsy. I would also suggest cutting them out from the back, you can clean the top surface later, if you do it this way you won't have the chance of a mistake ruining the sheet pattern.

cheers

When cutting Wills sheet you can end up with a little lip to the edge that will show up after painting - it's easy to scrape away with a craftknife and worth doing.

This is a two pence piece with a Wills sheet on top. I cut the sheet a little larger, which also meant I did not have to be as accurate, and then sanded it to the coin with a dremel.

I have started using the Wills sheets for bases. I use a 22mm extra thin base from Litko and glue a slightly largert square of the Wills sheet to the base. I then cut away the surplus plastic sheet using the Litko base as a guide and finish off by sanding. It took me ages to find something that would cut through the Wills plastic and eventually settled on some heavy duty cutters. Below are a couple of quick and slightly blurry photos, but they should give you the idea.
