Whats a good filler to use on the base of my minis to level them out and give it texture for painting?

I've used both wood putty and drywall compound.

For miniatures, I prefer to use a putty, like Green Stuff, Milliput or even ProCreate. Your miniatures are the focalpoint of all your games, and also need the sturdiness, as they get handled a lot. besides; you really don't need a lot per base, so wouldn't be all too expensive.

You could use wall filler, clay etc, but they dry rather brittle and the wear and tear of battle might mean your basing work might chip off the base itself (or washer/coin whatever you tend to use)...

I use plumber's epoxy; it's very similar to Milliput. It cures in about 15 minutes & can be sanded flat.If you add a washer or such for weight, you give your mini a decent chance of landing base first when he/she/it does the inevitable lemming leap off the gaming table.

I use tile adhesive which has a sandy structure and mix in a little PVA.
For difficult to reach spots I water it down a little.

Another vote for tile grout. Get the waterproof one as it contains PVA which makes it flexible.

Polycell "Fix & Grout" for me: very easy to use, can be smoothed with water before it dries or sanded/filed afterwards.

Thanks every one for the suggestions. I have painted up some minis I'm rather proud of and dont want to soil them with a poorly done base. I'll see what I have available up here from what you all suggested and give it a try. Look for some pics in the coming week.

I use the very easy route of just sand mixed with PVA glue.

I use either PVA and sand or Vallejo stone effect fine white pumice.

[Bugsda]

Artex is the best stuff i've used.
