Glueing Plastic to Cardboard
« on: 02 January 2012, 03:47:39 PM »
The boy bought some Airfix Robin Hood and Airfix Sheriff of Nottingham troops but they have tiny bases (not to mention awful moulds!) so fall over a lot.

I didn't want to waste a lot of time and effort basing such naff little minis so I figured I'd cut up some cereal box squares to base them on.  I tried pva and then poly cement and neither are binding the plastic to the cardboard.

What's the best glue for sticking plastic to cardboard? Should I just go straight for the superglue?

I've used superglue (i.e. Cyanoacrylate) many, many times to affix plastic to cardboard, both the softish variety of 1/72 figures, as well as hard polystyrene. Works like a charm, although a hot glue gun would work as well - I'd stay clear of PVA as this doesn't provide a strong enough bond, and plastic glue won't work as it cannot dissolve the cardboard.

Thanks. Guess I'll break out the superglue.

You can try liquid silicone.

The expensive brand is called "no more nails", but for less meney you can buy a good sized bottle at any craft or hobbie store (mom/wife/girlfried kind of hobbie store, not ours  ;) )

Hope that helps.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

I'd suggest common or garden Evo-Stik, or one of the analagous cheapie brands you can pick up in places like Screwfix / Toolstation etc

I seem to recall from my youth that cereal cardboard bases don't stop anything falling over!  Pennies or washers might be more stable, and arguably less bother, as you don't have to cut them out.

By the way, those Airfix figures can scrub up quite nicely.

Back from the dead, almost.

One of those two part epoxy type glues can work well. Otherwise superglue. Certainly ditch the cereal boxes for stgurdier bases - can't help but wonder what your using them for if you do not like them. Steve yours look fantastic! Inspired to complete mine.

Those look great Steve, certainly scrub up well!

Re:Golgotha, the boy just bought a couple of boxes of them with his pocket money a while ago and has been moaning at me that they keep falling over. I just wanted to do a quick fix so he can get on with fighting with them by throwing dice at them to kill them :)

Nothing really worked perfectly in the years that I was still using the old Airfix plastics. I found that rubber cement worked best though. The kind that you spread onto both surfaces and stick when tacky. Havent tried it yet but I think gorilla glue should work.
