How to get quickshade off?
« on: 16 September 2012, 09:38:10 AM »
I have a couple of already painted minis sealed with quickshade varnish that need total cleaning, but the stuff I usually use with normally painted (quickshde-less) figures (Cif Power Clean) doesn't work in this case.

Gents, how to get quickshade off?

Try something more agressive: universal solvent, available hat DIY stores everywhere.

You might also try less (but still quite) agressive substances first: acetone and turpentine. Nut I'd go for the universal solvent right away, as it solves everything acetone or turpentine do solve, but you don't have to find out which one of the two is the one to apply.

If you have sealed plastics, resin or finecast minis universal solvent will propably solve them es well. In this case I guess you will have to live with the methods I described in another thread

Theny I'd guess you best try Turpentine. The long drying time of QS makes me suspect it's oil based. I don't know what turpentine does to plastics though, but I guess it just does nothing. Throw a Quickshaded sprue snippet into a turpentine glass and look what happens in the next days. You should be able to "borrow" the turpentine needed for testing from any artist you know.

Please tell us about the results...

By the way, should we compile a mini cleaning tutorial from all the info spread across the board? The amount of topics realted to it we had recently sugests a huge interest in this.

Try oven cleaner, the brand we have here (Australia) that I have had most success with is called 'Ezy-Off'. If you don't have that brand then I suggest the most non-green, not good for your health cleaner you can find.

Wear heavy duty gloves and working in a well ventilated area (like outside is best), liberally spray the cleaner onto the models and put them in an air tight container (big zip-loc bag will do). Leave for an hour or so, then scrub off with a toothbrush and soapy water (a drop of dishwashing liquid will do for the soap part).

Disclaimer: I have used this with success on acrylic and enamel painted plastic figures, never had anything with quickshade on it to try and while it hasn't harmed the plastic, I would try a test sample first just in case.

Cheers!

Interesting unorthodox solutions people come up with  lol The most unhealthy solution I heard so far was to use break fluid from cars. Highly toxic, difficult to get, but seems to do the trick on metal minis (no idea what it does with plastics)

one of the minis is soaking in simple household thinner (for ca. an hour and a half now) and quickshade and paint is coming off beutifully (it's called simply 'thinner', 'higító', here in Hungary). I'm keeping an eye on it tho, so it doesn't start to eat the plastic. So far everything is fine.
