Best Cthulhu miniature so far IMHO
« on: 26 January 2013, 07:39:39 PM »
Look guys, the pricing is INSANE, I fully agree, in fact it's so expensive probably even I who recommends this figure won't buy it. Never the less, in my opinion the new GW Vortex Beast is the best Cthulhu figure in existence so far (next to the Khurasan non-Cthulhu :) ) It's huge, as well.

I see as more of a Dark Young myself, but the Lovecraftian influence is there, regardless of which gribbly you plan on using it for.

This miniature has made me want to get rid of all my warhammer chaos stuff. Suits Cthulhu but don't like it for warhammer.

It certainly is so over-the-top that I get insane just from looking at it  :D

Not a fan, sorry. Everything they do lately seems over designed and too busy

You can see more pics here http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440004a&prodId=prod1870062a
there are even a couple of 360ยบ visors, one for each build option.
The good point is it's a kit with two build options, so you will have spare pieces to scratchbuild something else with the remaining bits.
On the sprue photos seems like the thing on the back (portal/orb/whatever-it-is) is a piece apart.
As exwarhammer player i feel it a bit far of my concept of what warhammer should look like, but I suppose they should evolve to follow taste of the younger new players used to other kind of imagery.
50GBP it's a bit pricey for my pocket, but there are some resin pieces out there in the same range of price.

Not my thing, and IMO also not so Cthulhuish...
 :? :`

I really dislike the sculpted effects, like drops etc. too stylish IMO!
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

Looks kinda JRPG in it's styling, IMO. I suppose that's good if you're big into JRPGs (or Korean fantasy: that stuff's got the same kind of baroque stylization turned up to 11), but for me it doesn't mesh with the Cthulhu atmosphere. It's too... artificial? Decorative? It's not really organic or "real" is what I mean: the lines and curves are consciously artistic rather than natural.

...Which could actually work great in the case of something that is consciously crafted in-universe. Stylization like that would be right at home in the case of say, an aspect of Nyarlathotep, or a Yithian building. Cthulhu, dark young, etc should have a more "raw" look though IMO.

But then I'm really hard to satisfy when it comes to Lovecraft imagery in general. Truth is, I don't think there's any Lovecraft miniatures I've seen that are more than "sort of adequate" at best. I really have to sit down and sculpt my own one of these days.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Doesn't immediately scream HPL at me either, despite the tentacles. I think the genius of Providence was more into amorphous and nebulous than whoever designed this. Maybe it could be considered some sort of really weird biomechanical armoured suit for some large, squishy tenctaled critter if you remove some of the more exessively baroque detailing (c.f. the portal thingy, spikes [oh and it needz moahr skullz!!1!11!]).

I really dislike the way GW is going with each army having a mega huge miniature. That's a bit of a contradiction isn't it. Funnily enough I can't see a skull on this at all  lol
