Evening all,

A merry Xmas to you all.

I've recently cone into possession of some lovely Foundry pirates and have now got a hankering for all things 'Arrrr' shaped.

Pirates abound, as do ships, whalers, row boats etc. but who does some golden age RN Tars? Marines and Naval Officers?

I have looked, honest I have, and it seems that there is an abundance of Napoleonic, Victorian and pulp sailors but not models that would pass muster for 1680 - 1720...

Help me please LAF you're my only hope...etc.

Most seem to use Napoleonic era figs but Marlburian Grenadiers are more suited. Naval officers - not sure.

I can't remember who made em, but there is a very nice set of Marines with tricorne hats, they have appeared at least once in this forum. Might have been a discontinued range by Black Scorpion ?(their website doesn't have them).

I think they will be quite large in comparison to the Foundry figures, personally I'm looking at Front Rank's Jacobite era Government trops figures

Lovely figures and more in scale with the Foundry pirates. Range includes grenadiers, gun crew and mounted dragoons.

'Golden Age' of Piracy would be early 18thC no? So use whatever Marlburian/WSS figures float your boat for marines. I like the ebor ones. For matelots, just use the less over the top pirates, Artizan, Crusader and Eureka dobsome decent ones.

I painted all the Foundry cutthroat figures wearing short jackets in uniform bluejackets and white ducks, giving me a force of 20 or so (slightly piratical looking) Royal Navy tars

For 'soldiers' I used an assortment of Front Rank 7YW / 1745 types - although as others have said, the classic 'Golden Age of Piracy' is more like 1675 - 1715, so Malburian figures would be more appropriate. Or the ex-Copplestone, now North Star, Glory of the Sun figures. They'd be perfect.

I don't like the Black Scorpion 'marines'. For me, they don't look like marines, more like dismounted cavalry. And something about the uniforms makes them look almost 19th Century (apart from the tricorns). There again, the BS pirate range is very much at the fantasy end of the pirate minis spectrum, so you pays your money and takes your choice I suppose

What you will definitely find is that Black Scorpion and Foundry pirates are not compatible. The rank and file (i.e. non-character figure) Foundry cutthroats in particular are quite small in stature, whereas the BS pirates are a good 32mm tall and quite lanky. Very different styles.

Not that such things bother everybody as much as they bother me

In our pirate games we use miniatures in late 17th and/or early 18th century / Marlburian uniforms (mostly from Foundry and Front Rank) such as these :

When I was starting a pirate project (which I abandoned), I used scratch built minis from Wargames Factory WSS line (mixing cavalry/infantry/cannon crews). Game up with some decent stuff.

Agree totally on everything Captain Blood said.

We use Front Rank Government Grenadiers as RN Marines and Foundry pirates painted in a blue "uniform" as jack tars.
