Basing for diferent environments?
« on: August 05, 2014, 03:15:25 AM »
I've got some pirates and some gladiators that are in desperate need of basing. Ive got em glued to bases and I'm looking for a good set of colors to paint, (and subsequently drybrush) the groundwork.
Preferably vallejo colors as that's what I have a lot of.

In addition to Desert/sand bases I've got some vietnam figures which need groundwork. What have other people painted their bases?

As an example I've been painting my war of the roses bases Scorched brown, then drybrushing vomit brown and then bleached bone.
Any Suggestions?

I start with a red-brown base colour (I use a cheap artist's acrylic paint for this), followed by a dry brush of Yellow Ochre (Vallejo Model colour 837) and then a final dry brush with Pale Sand (Vallejo model colour 837). The last two were the closest matches I could find for the Vomit Brown/Bleached Bone mix (although pale sand is a bit lighter than Bleached Bone).

Then add static grass and clump foliage to taste (probably none for the Gladiators, unless they've escaped  ;) )
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

Vallejo game color has a decent match for vomit brown in the form of filthy brown. I was looking for a more yellowed base. I think. That color scheme looks pretty good, just a bit too brown for my tastes.

Iraqi Sand is my favourite.
Khaki as basecoat and then a drybrush of the Iraqi Sand.
(Although I sometimes use other brown tones to start with or just give the whole a wash of dark brown)

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

For Vietnam, I'd go with either rotten, dried leaves for a djungle look or reddish-brown earth for more open country. Valejo Leather Brown might fit for the leaves.

For gadiators, Iraqi Sand, and for pirates, I don't know... resin plank bases :D
