Janner, if those numbers are close to reality, i´m surprised. I thought the deserting numbers would be greater than those.
It appears that from 1812 on the ranks where filled with other nations too and that makes sense because at the time, Portugal was freed from the french influence and the Anglo-Portuguese army was fighting in Spanish soil so any replacements to those regiments would be very dificult to obtain.

Unfortunately, George Nafziger does not give his sources, but they were usually archival information from a carton and his research generally stands up okay to testing.

Interesting figures Janner - were these in one of the appendices to Nafziger's "Napoleon's Invasion of Russia"? It is on my bookshelf and I had a quick thumb through but, as with most of his books, there are quite a few interesting appendices in there.

That is probably the strength of Nafziger to my mind and he reminds me of Oman in that regard, although I think Nafziger would have had a much harder job in unearthing his sources. He is not infallible as you say, but I still think it is one of the most generous acts I have ever seen when he posted most of his OOBs online so they can be downloaded free of charge.
