Storypath Cards - Kickstarter
« on: April 12, 2016, 06:08:27 PM »
At the closing hours, this is a fully funded KS by a gent who has successfully delivered a number of game KSs.  Although designed with the traditional "D&Dish" settings, these could work in any RPG where individual characters rather than units are used.

I intend to use them in solo gaming as another tool in the toolbox to help drive the narrative outside of my control.

"Control over the narrative in a roleplaying game has traditionally resided entirely with the Gamemaster. A handful of early roleplaying games played with this norm (e.g. both Ars Magica and Prince Valiant Storytelling Game offered a means to rotate the role of GM).

The new Storypath Cards continue the revolution of the original Whimsy Cards by extending narrative control beyond the GM in any tabletop roleplaying game.

Of course, Storypath cards don’t turn a traditional game into a GM-less game. There’s still a need for one player who possesses a more complete knowledge of the plot and setting, and clearly there is no lack of demand for this style of play as it remains the default play style in the most commercially successful games, but sharing control of the narrative has a variety of benefits for both the players and the GM."

Don't know what you mean by Drama Cards.  The explanation on the KS (I'm not connected to it) is that they are a re-do of a product from early in RPG days and they alow the gamers to affect the story line.  May not be anything you NEED, but I had not seen them before and thought it was an interesting idea.

Drama Cards are something done by /tg/ based off Touhou Cards. They're player agency in the plot, basically.

I used to hand them out as rewards.

Pretty cool idea, looks like a rebirth of an old idea.
While I don't play RPGs, I like what they may add to a game.
I like events that may change a outcome to a battle.
I try to throw them into the mix in games I run.
But its not everyone's cup of tea.

I agree.  There is another tool I use already as a solo gamer, though it is also used for both group RPG games as well as solo and that is the MYTHIC Game Master Emulator.

Download for less than a tenner, has a Yahoo group.  About half the folks there (when i was actively posting there were RPG types and the other half were wargamers.  In the files, there is a complete 20+ episodes of a NWF game by one gent, and my unfinished new take on the Magnificent Seven.  We all know how the story starts and what the seven were doing.  I start with the premise that there's a story of what they were doing beforehand, and, things may not end up like the movie.  For example:
1.  Seven isn't a magic number - may be more, may be less.
2.  Chris might not be the leader - at the start, he only promised the Mexicans that he'd put the word out.
3.  Events could have unfolded differently - the funeral procession, the fast dray knife vs gun contest might have seen any of those three leads injured or killed.
4.  Calvera might have had a gang that wasn't starving and poorly equipped.
5.  What if the gang was larger?
6.  Regardless of size what if the gang didn't have mostly mooks as the members?
7.  What if there is a rival gang battling with Calvera for "property rights" on the town for some larger reason?
8.  What if there were other candidates for the gunfighters besides the ones in the movie?

on those and other ideas, I started a project to retell the story.  Have to pick it back up someday.
