SODT Question - Shooting From Ambush
« on: 28 September 2017, 05:29:45 PM »
Receipt of the Pequot War scenario book (Van Nuys!) led me to review the base Song of Drums and Tomahawks rules, and I came up with a question.

Ambush rule, p.37, "A figure that shoots or melees from ambush receives a +1 modifier for their attack." This +1 modifier is listed in the table "Modifiers for Melee" at the top pf p.38, and also on the melee side of the Quick Reference card. But, it is not listed in table "Modifiers for Shooting" in the middle of p.30, nor on the shooting side of the Quick Reference card. I suppose that's why I never before noticed that this mod applies to shooting as well as melee.

Um. I'm guessing the omission of this mod from the shooting rules is an oversight, and the +1 mod really does apply to shooting from melee. Is that right? Thanks.
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

Good question! I hadn't noticed the inconsistency before. Honestly, the modifier is there for GMs to use when designing scenarios. I tend not to use it when I am doing a convention game to keep things balanced. It would be great to use, for example, when refighting Magua's attack on the British column during the early part of the Last of the Mohicans. The rules state it is to be used when also using Hidden Deployment. It SHOULD be on both the Shooting and Melee side of the Quick Reference card, though.

I will make notations and add it to the next version of the QR card. Good catch!

Thx. I appreciate being able to discuss SODT here in LAF. It's convenient.
