Cheaper undercoat
« on: 17 June 2009, 07:04:08 AM »
Hi all, not sure if this is the right forum, but i normally use GW's black undercoat spray, but at £8 a pop (and the fact it seems to be only lasting a month or less) Im wondering if theres any cheaper alternatives?

Cheers, Flip.

For wargaming minis which will see a far deal of handling I would stay particular. Good undercoats aren't necessarily cheap. I am talking about the about the bond-to-metal/resin, slightly granular car primer variety. I am currently using Belton, a German brand, comes in white, grey or black, and costs about €10.

I use Hycote from independant car spares shops. £2.99 for 400ml. I was once told that Hycote can for Halfords who sell 300ml for twice the price.

I have had great success with Krylon Flat black and also with Quikcolor.  It's a brand that walmart carries and also most home improvement stores.  Even better, it's only .99 per can!

I've also been looking for a new source of primer, thanks for all the info! ;)

I use whatever primer is on sale when I hit the paint store, and haven't had any issues with primer in 10+ years of the practice!

I currently have a can of Tremco Tremclad Grey, a can of Krylon grey primer, and a can of red oxide primer bought for my long-running, slow-moving 15mm Mars projects. None of them overpriced, undersized "hobby" primers.

I have a can of "Action" (thrift chain) grey primer (400ml, €2,-) which works fine, unfortunately they only have their primer in grey so for black I stick with Citadel until I find something better 8)

Thanks for all the pointers in this topic though, seems any primer is good as long as it's really a primer.

There is a big movement on TMP towards brush on Gesso, which can be tinted any color you like, or for a little more money bought in black. It goes on thick, takes about 24 hours to dry and has a very hard shell; I've had pretty good results with it.
It can leave bare patches when too thin.

As already said cheap is not always good. I've stuck with Halfords grey and black for years now, perfect finish, usually have a buy 2 get one free offer on too.

I've been using the WalmArt brand flat black for quite a while now.
I am thinking about priming my next batch of figures with Gesso, brushed on.
