Royal Navy contingent for Suakin campaign
« on: 19 August 2022, 02:35:46 PM »
I’ve finished my Royal Navy contingent for my Suakin campaign … well, until I start work on the armed train 😬

From the left: HMS Hecla’s company of Blue Jackets, commanded by Captain Arthur Wilson; HMS Carysfort’s RMLI company, Gatling gun battery, and company of Blue Jackets; rear: Private Thomas Edwards (1 Black Watch) with a pair of ammunition mules; front: Vice-Admiral Sir William Hewett VC KCB and staff.

Wilson and Edwards would be awarded VCs for their actions at second El Teb and Tamai respectively.

More on my blog.

Cheers
JJ

JJ, cracking work sir!!! Did you use figures with different headgear to denote the different ships they came from or because your research showed they wore those particular covers? Not that I’m button counting, I’m just curious.

Thank you for your kind words.

@JBaumal: there are photos of HMS Hecla’s ratings wearing sennet hats on an armed train in Egypt, so that was my cue for different head gear, and a useful differentiator. I have no idea if this would be historically accurate for Suakin, though.
