I have three scales:

15mm I only use for Team Yankee, there I use the TY squad bases made with the "the lower the better" philosophy.

For 28mm I use the standard GW bases, rectangular for fantasy and (pre-1850) historical stuff, round for scifi. You do not have to buy them from GW or other gaming companies, you can order big packages of them dirt cheap from China in any size. I like them because I use the rim colouring for marking factions, also in some games (Infinity) I can easily add facing markings.

For my 1/35 figures I use 2,5mm mdf bases. I try to go for the as-low-as-possible (a lot of figures are multi-faction, so "rimjob" :) is not practical) , but the base shall be tall enough to hold the figure by its wire pins, 2,5mm is just a good compromise.

For both 28mm and 1/35 I use mdf movement trays cut from the same 2,5mm mdf (in two layers: one to hold the figure and one base), It works just fine with both types of bases I use.

Depends on the scale and manufacturer.  If the miniature has an integral base I will use a 1mm and blend it in with putty.  Most of my 28mm figures are on 3mm bases and all my 15mm are on 1mm.

My personal preference is 1mm round bases in a variety of diameters.

Thin thin and then a bit thinner.  Hate the plinth type slottabases too

For 28mm, it's almost all 3mm.  What can I say, I started with 40k.

I do prefer plastic bases with hollow insides though. Makes it easy to add a bit of weight. A penny for standard plastic figs and lead counter weights for tippy imbalanced metal figures.

I have been, and still am, 'experimenting' with all sorts:-
Coins, especially those with a high iron content, i.e. magnetic, are great for skirmish figures when matched with a magnetic sheet inside the really useful box.
MDF circles, a great cheap way for rebasing. I picked up several bags full of such at a show. £2.50 a bag, bargain.
Clear bases, very nice for skirmish games that use varied terrain. Not nice to see figures bringing the country-side into a building.
Slotta-bases, can be good for old 25mm skirmish figures, as it brings their height up closer to 28mm figures, plus when used upside down are great for
                    creating swampy type bases.
I have also used card, plywood, CDs, old credit cards etc. etc.   :D

I'm actually of two (three?) minds on this...

For all of my 40K(ish) and WHFB(ish) projects, I prefer good old slottabases. But for most other projects, I actually prefer metal washers or Renedra 1mm thick plastic bases; they just blend into the table and terrain better.

Slight caveat here though; I also have several projects that use neither, but rather those slotta bases with the curved lip (Warmachine, Bushido, The Drowned Earth).

So it basically all depends on the setting/system. I will merrily mix slotta bases with washers on the table, but for some reason I don't like the lipped bases mixed in with the other two... ::)

Thin all the way for me.  Use either sheet steel squares and rectangles or more recently round from Total Element (not war-game bases but work great as such).  Thin bases improve the aesthetic for me which is what appeals to me.

I appreciate those who like thick bases to avoid their figures being handled but I'm of the opinion that figures are for handling - with proper care, of course - rather than in a display case.  And I'll risk a bit of damage now and then.

I have been wargaming since the 1960s long before Slottabases.  I generally use a minimal base made art mounting card cut to 20mm x 15mm rectangles for most infantry with the corners snipped or 20mm MDF circles of 2mm thickness. My bases are as small as possible.   I have never liked plastic slotta bases and find the current 25mm to 32mm bases far too large.  Though the thin plastic bases (any shape) supplied with plastic figures are useful for terrain, mounted figures, monsters etc. I am not keen on bases that are terrain pieces other than for static display models or dioramas.  Basically my bases are small, thin, simple and match my wargames table.

I just checked and the bases I am using on my latest project are 4mm!

And I love them.

4mm is the new 3mm.
