Another long gap between posts, but here are the first of a small batch of Eureka Miniatures ‘ragged continentals’, a lovely set, full of character. Originally I bought them to paint up as additional militia figures but decided I really like the idea of a few units of battle hardened continentals after a long campaign season.

They look great!  :-*

What a fine thread this is, from the scratch building, minis, civilians, animals... really complete project you have.

Thanks for keeping us all posted on your progress!

nicely done, but the raggedness does appear limited to their trousers... it's as if they waded across a river of moths...

Haha, true enough, although to be fair to the sculptor, their coats are also full of holes, but as I've photographed these from the front that is less obvious in the pictures. Many have worn holes at the elbow etc but, as you note, it's their trousers that show the most signs of wear.

Lovely depiction of "wagged, wascally webels".

FWIW, good choice not to depict them as militia as I doubt that militia - or State troops, for that matter - would ever have looked like bad.  Militia did tend to turn up foe longer periods of service, typically 3-6 months, in their "working clothes", but these would have been kept in good repair and they were never in the field long enough to end up looking like that, no matter what time of year (State troops would generally have been issued some sort of uniform, but would mainly spend their time in garrison, and have endured nothing like the hard campaigning of the Continentals).

The Continentals, on the other hand, would have been out in all weathers for the duration of the "campaign season"; re-issue of lost/damaged items was virtually unheard of, and the next year's uniform would invariably have been late - in fact, more of them wearing items of their own civilian clothing to make up for the bits that either weren't issued, or simply didn't arrive (usually small clothes [waistcoat/breeches] and trousers/overalls - hats and coats tended to be the most commonly provided items), would give them even greater accuracy!
No plan survives first contact with the dice.
