Minamalist terrain - 1st board in 15 mins 31st Oct

Now I'm catching up with life and getting things sorted I've been thinking about some terrain for my 2mm figures.

The first attempt (seen here) failed due to my lack of skills with cork and the naff stuff I purchased (more me than it though) so I wondered if I could do better with Funky Foam?

I've used this for dirt tracks so I am happy to work with it and I know this sounds strange but:

1) It comes in blue = water, green = farm land, grey = roads, dark green = woods, brown = tracks and black = built up areas
2) It's simple to cut
3) It's cheap (£4 so far)

The end result may not be realistic but I think it may make a 'computer map' or very abstract aerial view.

I have seen one site with SJG Ogre miniatures (here) where this abstract style has been used and this



is very stylised and works well.

Thoughts please.

Hi Andrew,

I would suggest that the minimalist terrain illustrated is a great starting point.

Now - try to add interest with over spraying lighter or darker colours with an airbrush (you will not need an expensive one as the over spraying will need to be vague and the patchier the better).

Could you describe Funky Foam for those who've never heard of the product? Any similarity to the 2-3mm craft foam ("Foamies"??) that are available in  letter-sized sheets at the craft stores?

Over here you can get craft kits as well as the plain sheets (e.g. http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/shop-online/funky-foam.htm)

it is the same stuff - 2mm thick.

I thought I would go large scale to try first:



I've found out:

1) Glue marks show up - not as bad as the reflections but care is needed
2) PVA glue sticks fine and bits do not fall off
3) Normal acrylic paints hold fine and do not crack when bent.
4) I've packed my flok away somewhere 

I need to get sorted ASAP

@Tony - I did have a good drool over that map of yours - not sure if I want that level of detail as this started as a simple test for 2mm landships as a filler till I can get the 'BigBoard' space sorted but I can see it may get out of hand...

I've just posted the first stage of the build on my 2mm blog (well under used) here and the completed board so far looks like:



I do not have a spray / airbrush but think I may dry brush it and add hedges / trees over the next couple of days.
