I use fender washers... they are dirt cheap and thin, strong and you can use magnets in your figure case with them.

Completely agree! I also prefer washers. The little hole in the middle is perfect for a neodym magnet. The cost is not higher than actually using currently valid coins, especially compared to a 2 pence coin.

 I Superglue the figure to a 1p coin and then blend the base to the coin using green stuff which also helps it to bond together.
