What rules for Russo-Japanese?
« on: 11 February 2013, 08:15:42 PM »
Hi all

What rules are you using for the Russo-Japanese war? And for Spanish-American? I was thinking, in this last, in a size like San Juan Hill.

Peter Pig "Square Bashing" covers Russo-Japanese and in theory Spanish-American, although we mainly use them for 1919-20
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Square Bashing is notionally for 15mm, but can be used with other scales.
Units are formed of 4 stands of figures, and the game is played on a squared grid 4 feet wide by 3 deep or 6 wide by 3 deep.

The Army lists (55 of them) actually start with US 1898-99 (Philippines & Cuba) and Spanish 1898-99 (Cuba) and end with Paraguayan Army (Chaco War 1928-35)

There is a bit of blurb on the PP website:

I'd suggest the old Frank Chadwick/ Greg Novak Over the Top. It's a WW1 version of Command Decision, plays well and would allow you to do brigade sized battles. That would be my choice and I'm getting perilously close to getting into the period.

I think there's a mod for Black Powder over on the Yahoo group/site.

You could probably get away with a couple of battalions a side unless you're doing Mukden  :D

cheers

I think you can take SAW rules and adapt them for Russo-Japanese also.  I have not tried most of what follows but a sampling of what (rules and reviews, in no particular order, in this list) I have considered:

Free:  https://sites.google.com/site/petiteguerre/home/splendid-little-warriors

If you can find these:

The Splendid Little War
Miniatures Wargames Rules for the Spanish-American War. These rules focus on the basic realities of the battlefield as reported by the participants. While generalizing weapons types for ease of play, the flavour of this contest has been reproduced in a quick-play format.

Another possibility is from here: http://www.webring.org/l/rd?ring=pickelhaube;id=17;url=http%3A%2F%2Fhmwrs%2Ecom%2F

Thanks to all for your answers.
I was thinking in using battallions or half brigades as units. I think Mukden is a bit...big.
Do anybody know if there is a Fire and Fury variant?
Emilio.
