EOTD or In Her Majesty's Service or both?
« on: February 27, 2013, 06:33:49 PM »
I've been following the discussions on both of these games and both seem very similar. I am interested in playing a straight forward Victorian game with out the Steam Punk and weird weapons and monsters. So my question is which of these rules better suit my needs or is there a different set of rules altogether. I love the miniatures in both ranges and most looking forward to the Ripper Street figures.
Thanks

I can't comment on In Her Majesty's Name as I have seen the rules yet, they are not released until Salute. The rules designers have been posting over on the relevent thread on the VSF board so you may get some answers there.

As for EOTD it can be played as a straight adventure game without the monsters or steam tech, but then you would be missing out on alot of what the rules were really created for.

If you want a simple rule set for shoot em ups between groups of individually armed figures then look at something like Legends of the Old West (although it is out of print there are still copies floating about). Whilst its a western game the rules are not genre specific, they are very generic and would work fine for Victorian adventures.

IHMN plays perfectly fine without the science stuff. The sciency stuff is organised in different columns to the normal weapons for reference and as you can create your own 'Adventuring Companies', weapon choices etc is controlled by you.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Do you normally play any skirmish games? If so what rules do you use? Malamute's point about Legends of the Old West is a good one - if you take out the 'weird science' and Steampunk from steampunk-weird science games, then what you're left with is a generic game that applies to roughly the right period. Anything that can be used to cover actions between about 1850 and 1910 would be suitable, or even (as you're talking essentially about a game where people can move, see each other, shoot, hit, run away or not), any game system at all that can handle people and projectile weapons can be used, with unsuitable elements removed and perhaps particular elements added (such as flags acting as morale-boosting objectives or something).

I collect and paint more than I game these days. The gaming club I went to fizzled out a few years ago after the fella who started it up past away. I prefer skirmish games were you feel every miniature takes on a personality the only games back then we used the Landser WW 2 rules that I think were free from Black Tree. And to be honest never even thought about Wild West rules which is a bit thick of me.

I'm going for both.  But I am a rules collector, and the figures fit in with everything VSF/Steampunk   :D

Gothic Horror without monsters?

 :o

I chose Chaos in Carpathia for my my GH but wouldn't a straight up historical skirmish game work for you?

I was going to suggest Chaos in Carpathia as well since you didn't want steampunk, but you don't want monsters either. I've not played Rules with No Name, but that might fit the bill.

Good Evening Gentlemen,

There is no reason that you could not play IHMN 'straight'. It is based firmly in the late Victorian period and most of the Weaponry and Talents would transfer quite well.

I expect that The British Army, Le Legion Entrangere, Scotland Yard, the USMC and the Brick Lane Commune would work perfectly fine without the 'extras'. The others might take a little conversion work. Adding a small amount of Gothic Horror by careful use of the Mystical Powers would be easy too.

Each company has one or two interesting characters, but the lists are written so that you really don't have to use them as there are also standard leader figures to draw upon.

One of the things about IHMN that may appeal to you all is that it has a fully-featured costing system for troops, weapons, armour, talents and powers. This is because we are actively encouraing you to create your own troop-types and companies.

The IHMN blog will be available soon and on this we will be featuring a lot more material and player's own creations.

Pip-pip,
Craig.
