I am complete convert to 3mm (diameter) x 1mm (thickness) disc rare earth magnets for 15mm tank turrets, 1/600 aircraft, detachable schurzen, 'swappable' bases for 28mm guns &c. &c.
However, in my experience the really cheap (Chinese eBay) magnets tended to oxidise to a grey powder and crumble quite easily after a few months in storage, whereas sourcing slightly more expensive ones from a (in my case local) Australian dealer yielded much better quality - not sure why - possibly the chrome coating?
It's true that you can make life easier for yourself by using only one magnet and a suitable steel nail head or some other attracting material, but I have also found that in some applications there's nothing quite like two appropriately attracting magnets. It's as simple as determining the polarity you need, and, immediately prior to attaching the magnet with CA glue, marking one face with a Sharpie marker to ensure you remember which one is right (i.e. you can mark either face, as long as it helps you with the polarity). The marking does not inhibit superglue.
Anyhow, good luck, once you've gone down the RE magnet path, you'll never look back.
