VSF rule systems
« on: 23 January 2009, 10:00:16 AM »
Chaps,

I have played GASLIGHT and it gives enjoyable easy to play and generaly good fun games. I have now played, and based all my little chaps for, They Died for Glory. The system works well for battles with about 24 - 30 x 20 figure battalions per side, with a few Regiments of Cavalry to add a bit of Dash and colour. Using the 28mm ranges rifles have a range of 36 inches, for the French Chasspot, and artillery has a range of up to about 100 inches. We also played a game using 15mm distances with 28mm figures which worked well

I am looking at the possibilty of introducing a bit of steam and the odd hero to a few games, the concept looks fairly easy, steal a few bits from other rules etc. Has any one attempted anything similar?

Sort of. I'm attempting to write a VSF rule set based on 40k (as for all its many, many problems, it's still my favourite set), although I think I'll eventually give up and use GASLIGHT, due to my laziness  ::) .

I've never tried They Died for Glory, though, so I can't say how it could be changed.

answer_is_42,

Have you taken a look at the Great War rules? They are basically the old 40K rules. Aside from the I go, You go aspect I have found them enjoyable.

Huh. I never considered it, can't think why I shouldn't though. That may be the answer to most of my problems, thanks!

I second Skrapwelders' idea of Great War as a vsf platform.. we just played a game and they play well.  We have yet to add in the vehicles, but those rules seem well thought out.  Likely you will need special damage charts for wlakers and other vsf oddities, but that is fairly minor.

To throw something different into the mix. I play Brother Against Brother alot, (ACW system, but we play for other periods in the C19th).  Its a fun easy system to play with ramdom card based movement and is unit based with ten figures per unit.
The rulesbook Valour and Flesh and Steel uses the BAB mechanics but adds in the VSF elements like steam vehicles, flying machines etc.
