Received my copy from Lon at brigade games in the United States yesterday.  Wow! The production values of the book are the best I've seen from a non-GW game book in a long time.  Rules look very interesting although I haven't completely read them yet. One thing that's sweet is that your "column" is really composed like a tapas buffet: you get lots of choices of "small plates" of figures, like 3 of these guys and 5 of these guys, etc.  very cool actually because you got a nice diversity of figures without having to paint huge units.

How does that work? Do you have to have a "tapas buffet" or could you just take one sort of soldiers if you want to?

You choose a force to a set points value. Apart from those units that are restricted by rarity there's no real reason why you can't have all the same unit. You might find it'll come unstuck or struggle in some of the scenarios though.

I've asked elsewhere but what are the options/limits in the white men column? I want to know what to buy as i'm buying minis at the same time as the rulebook.

Buy the Foundry starter, it is very well made, you will find all you need to build a 70 points force.
And you can even go to the foundry website to see this starter, you'll see how many figures there are in any unit... :D

Also check out Northstar's column packs.  Colonel Bill is also selling his Darkest Africa stuff in Congo sized packs by the look of things. The service from Colonel Bill is great too.

I gather men come in set groups but what about the 'heroes' I understand that you can choose a scientist/retired officer/explorer but are you only allowed one?

Or is it one of each?

You must have one character, and can have two.

I suggest buying one of Foundry's Explorer character packs, that will give you a variety of figures to designate as the different types of characters.  And you can use three of the figures as an Explorer unit.

That's the idea, although the boxed set is tempting i'd rather have a more personalized force, explorer units come in groups of three, is their a limit to how many of each group?

Most groups are unlimited.  But some are limited to a single unit of that type per column (which is what your warband/force/army is referred to in Congo).

Explorers are limited to a single unit.  You can also take a single 4-man unit of Soldiers, which are professional, European-trained troops.  After that, if you still want to emphasize firepower, you can take any number of 4-man Trained Askari units, which are armed with rifles.

Trained Askari units are four-men units.
