A bit more about Congo by Studio Tomahawk
« on: 31 March 2015, 10:49:38 PM »

A bit more about Congo here.

Between this and The Men Who Would Be King, Colonial Wargaming looks like it will be having a very good 2016!

Could be a winner. I can see it bringing Darkest Africa back to the forefront of wargaming.

Looking forward to these rules as I have all the figures needed I think.
Just finished some Pygmies and a couple of witchdoctors yesterday.

As I only have only unpainted Darkest Africa figures am interested to know unit sizes (if there are units); or doesn't it uses units? I want to try to have 2 forces painted when the rules are available so I can play my first game with only painted figures (that would be the first time!).

Hum...I can't tell you the units size, cause the game is still in test (but will be finished very soon)...The authors are two friends of mine.
The last time I tested it, there were units of 3, 4, 5, 6 or even more figures (it depends of their rank), but the game could have changed...
Nevertheless, you can see my post to get an idea :

Sounds promising.....

Is anyone going to be releasing any new miniatures when the game is released I wonder?

How would they stand up to Foundry's timeless DA ranges and North Star for that matter?

Darrell.

Well from what I can see those are the French civilians for foundrys Franco-Prussian range, as much as a like the thought of a few dedicated minis, the freedom of not having an ''official'' range does make mixing and matching easier.

Personally i'd like to see a collaboration between Studio Tomahawk and North star, maybe re-release some minis as congo starter bundles?

Actually Drunkendwarf, the game description specifically states that it focusses on exploration only, and that the period covered ends before colonisation and the formation of colonial armies - so sadly, I fear that your Force Publique figures will have to go back in their box for now.

Still, this is a good thing because it means the game will be offering an alternative take on the subject to Chris Peers' two rule sets, which will remain as valid alternatives if you want to play a different style of game with the same figures. Also, unlike the Peers games, it's clear that it's a skirmish game; another major point of difference that will help to keep them distinctly separate game experiences.

I agree, with TMHWBK coming up we have more 'military' colonial battles/expiditions covered.

I'd personally like to see a campaign mode if you will, maybe exploring, building up forces ala Legends of the old west or Necromunda, have territories and actual end goals.

I'd like to see my scientific expedition start out bright and British but attrition and necessity means by the end it's  hard core of originals plus tribal warrior/mercenaries etc.
