Storing figures?

I store all my minis in cardboard boxes and foam trays (Feldherr). For 2017 I am planning to replace all remaining cardboard boxes with foam trays. I travel a lot with my minis, so storing them ready to go is the best practice for me. But honestly, storing terrain pieces becomes a much bigger problem for me.

I was lucky enough to get several 10 drawer filing cabinets when our offices were rebuilt.  Each drawer takes about 75-100 figures depending on base size or number of dividers.  They appear quite often in office sales and sometimes on e-bay if you are close enough to collect.


For travelling I have a number of wooden trays that were salvaged from a local shop when it was modernised from wood to steel and plastic.  These trays, by coincidence, fit into the fold flat cardboard storage boxes that removal companies use.

Almost all came free or at very low cost if you keep your eyes open and ask.

3+ years on from this blog post I could not be happier with my solution of 14 3/4" x 8 1/4" trays intended for the jewelry trade. Incredibly economical in $ and space to figure ratio, likely to still be available ten years from now, free shipping in the US, classy, varying heights, stack, fit in accompanying soft or hard bags/cases of any size you need, store nicely in those chromed shelf units, tough, not airtight... the list of positive traits goes on and on.

Two hardware cabinets, an apothecary's chest (largeish), map cases and some in display cases.  That's all the painted ones.  Unpainted are in boxes in microfiche cabinets in the garage (we're far enough south that cold isn't an issue, darn it!) unless they're resin or soft plastic, then they live in the house, mostly in boxes in the playroom but some are in a couple of sideboards in the back 'office'.
