Sticking a woodland scenics flock matt to MDF
« on: April 24, 2017, 07:35:38 PM »
Hey all,

Looking for suggestions.

I have one of these (http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/1RGVM-GG/page/1) that I plan on sticking to an MDF/Foam board. The board will be flat and this was just a shortcut to avoid texturing and flocking the board.

Would Mac Tac adhesive paper or glue work best? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any tips. Promise to report back with any interesting learnings.

Why not super 77 spray adhesive?  Easy to find in the states.  I am not sure over here in the UK becasue I have not looked.  Gives you a permanently tacky surface.  Just spray the wood, then work from the edges and smooth the mat over it.  My two cents.

I used Copydex (not sure the what the US alternative is) but I would advise against doing it.  It starts shedding its flock almost immediately and starts going bald.

Not sure about the specifics of the woodland scenics mat, but I've used various railroad ones in various projects over the years.

A spray adhesive tends to work best if it's paper backed.

Also, if the board is going to be a flat one, get a dowel longer than the board is wide (A cheap one from the hobby store works well, or even a pipe piece you might have). Open your mat up and roll it, flock side in, on the dowel before putting it in place. When you're ready to mount it, the dowel allows you to have a nicer, even pressure on the mat as you lay it out and is less likely to have bubbles and other issues when it goes down.

Sounds weird but works the best on both materials! Garanty of No-warping inclusive!

Take care to use the silver one, the red one is not tough enough to hold it in place for the lifetime of the module.

I used PVA and ruined the mat. It air-bubbled and when dry, did not stick properly. I notice in the hobby store that Woodland Scenics do a glue for this...  but it looked like PVA, so I never bought it. I then tried double side tape, but could not get the mat taught enough. At that point I gave up!
