Help, looking for "big" 28mm Russians
« on: 29 May 2017, 10:14:22 PM »
I've already got a pretty large collection of mid/late war Soviets using SHQ miniatures.
These are pretty big figures more like 30mm in size. Also a little odd looking by today's standards of sculpting, but I love them all the same!

Because of the size of the figures I've opted for 1/50 and 1/48 scale vehicles.

I'd like to add to this lot, probably more basic rifles and maybe sailors and NKVD?
I'm thinking early war now.
But I need the figures to be BIG!

Any ideas guys?

I second that I have several makes - Black Tree, Warlord, Eureka and Artizan mainly but Black tree are the most well fed of the Russians.
They are nominally 1/56th but are 28mm to eye

There was a company that did 1:48 scale figures but I can't remember them?

Not sure how whether they are tall enough for your wants (quoted as 28mm to eye) but 1st Corp are definitely chunky.

The OP has the old Chiltern figures sculpted by Jim Bowen now owned by SHQ. They are about 34-36mm high but very chunky. He is right that they go best with 1/48 vehicles. I have had the same problem matching up their Germans and Brits.
There is NOTHING out there that will go with them. I know, I have been looking for years.

My suggestion is: the later 40mm sculpts by the same sculptor in the Graven Images range are the same chunkiness (and crucially, weapon size) but the legs are lengthened. It would be possible to take a couple of mm each off the thighs and calves and then they would be the same. I practiced the technique with a 1/35 plastic soldier and got him down to 40mm and it looks OK, so I know it will work. Tim, PM me!
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Ahhh Chiltern - then you need 1st Corps or Gorgon
I sold my 1st Corps Soviets  (and 1/48th resin tank) as they were noticeably bigger than my other 28mm stuff.

That's a Pegasus 1/72 scale house in the background and FOW 15mm roads for scale I have no piccies of them next to other troops

More good info thanks chaps.

Yes, 1st Corps do almost work.
In fact I've got a couple of mortars and an mmg in my force from 1st Corps, which is fine as long as they don't stand next to the SHQ stuff!

The Tamiya figures are good but too correctly proportioned which makes the cartoon style of the SHQ figures look very odd indeed.

I had a similar problem as yourself, only with Germans. In my case I wound up collecting figures from various sources, but mostly converting Copplestone Russians (this took a while, but now I have sort-of Copplestone Nazis).

However, I've also used a couple of Tamiya bodies, but with Bolt Action arms (only from the newer sprues, so they're larger and have larger "wargames" hands) and heads sourced elsewhere (mine are mostly GW Empire or saved Copplestone heads) and a press-moulded stahlhelm. With the bigger hands/arms/heads they have enough of a "wargames" feel that they will mix with the Copplestone.

Here's my current nazis:

There's Dust Tactics, Artizan, Copplestone, 1-48 Combat, an ebob special miniature, and others.

Here's an example of a converted Tamiya motorbike crew:

I'm doing MG34 gunners and a runner next, since I had no way to make those out of Copplestone bodies.
