HLBS Cavalry
« on: 19 March 2009, 10:40:56 PM »
After a couple of years lurking and buying miniatures Ive finally got my VSF project(s) underway. I have got to finish the bases and do a few small details on the horses, I may change the officers horses completely for the same type as the troopers.  Got 10 17th Lancers on the painting desk at the moment. Hopefully this link will work

Great stuff, but I want to see that which makes them "VSF".   ;)

The VSF element is planned after the 17th Lancers and 11th Hussars are completed. There will be a 12th Lancer Steam Cycle Troop using Steamboy toys and some Dragoons using MageKnight steam horses.

Lovely work, if you dont mind I might just use those as a pianting guide for my cavalry . The comparison pic is rather handy too. Some of my VSF collecton wouldn't look out of place in a historcal game. In a way it adds to the VSF feel if you know what I mean.

Very nice. I'm looking forward to see what you do with the Steam boy toys. I just ordered a box of 12 random mecha to use for VSF projects.

That's what I like about VSF.  Take away the steam contraptions and you've got a historical army ready to use.  My own collection was built up with VSF in mind but is equally at home in a historical battle.

I have  spent ages in the last few weeks researching the Uniforms, its very confusing, Richard at HLBS told me they used Richard Simkins Uniforms of the British Army (The Cavalry Regiments) by W.Y Carman as the reference for the figures and I picked up a copy off a Amazon trader for about £25.00. Most confusing is when they ceased using shabracques and whether they were rounded or square. I think iv e got it about right now , except the heavy officers with leopard skin saddle covers, but if you want to be strictly historical the troops will range in date from about 1860 up to 1914 ( 2009 if you include the Life Guards ). Googling Richard Simkin and Harry Payne will bring up a wealth of images though, there was also a useful book i saw in  The Army Museum Queen Victorias (Gawd Bess 'er) Army in Color, The Paintings of Orlando Norie, but at £50.0 was a bit steep for me at the moment......next month maybe.

Umm, originally I just bout about 30 figures, but then after I saw Richard at the hammerhead show I ordered some more from the stock he had left over , and the order increased a couple of times after that. But its ok I didnt give him any money, I used paypal  ;D
I ended up with

5 1st LG     10 5th DG                 10 6th  Dragoons   10 15th Hussars
5 2nd LG     10 6th DG                 10 11th Hussars    10 17th Lancers
5 RHG        10 2nd D Scots Greys  10 12th Lancers
I only intend to use 15 for VSF mounts , the rest will be as standard.
Too many to use in a game, I reckon by normal ratios I would have to paint at least 1000 infantry......and thats not gonna happen!!
