Flying Lead is a two-sided game and would require one side to play the US and another the VC/NVA. I wanted it to be all players as US (or Australians, etc.) cooperating against the game system playing the enemy. That's what SS&SS does. The bad guys, so to speak, are handled by the Event Cards and game mechanics.
I ran my Viking Town Raid game using SS&SS and really liked the feel of the game. Through about 16 times running it at various conventions, the players really liked the mechanics and most said they were going to go out and get the rules. The cards, which are flipped on player activation failures on a one-for-one basis, come and go in waves and create a momentum in the game.
Plus, I like the idea of coop games in my old age, and wanted to try out writing a rules set for it...
