Still playing WAB V2?
« on: 02 October 2017, 09:48:10 PM »
A couple of old gaming buddies have expressed a desire to resurrect Warhammer Ancient Battles, version 2. I've decided to join them..
I was just wondering if it's got any tiny enclaves where it still gets played?
It's that long since I played it I've forgot most rules, and would like to ask a few questions.
Cheers
Tim

I went from WAB, to WAB2, then to WaC then back to WAB1.5!

There's a healthy WAB1.5 group on Facebook and an Age of Arthur event coming up in Peterborough soon, but I've not seen much going on for WAB2 to be honest Tim.

Cheers
Dave

I'm one of the weirdos who loved the changes that made V2

lol There were plenty of great additions to WAB2, but the Rulebook and AoA printing were so poorly executed in the end that the whole thing just seemed to fragment the players.

I've always felt comfortable playing WAB1.5 and the supplements, which I suppose is why I went back to it; like a pair of old slippers!

I'm going to the Peterborough event.
But would happily play WAB2.
Some things WAB2 did were improvements, some were WTF fixes for things that weren't broken.
Unlearning some of the better bits of WAB2 is making me take off my rose tinted spectacles about 1.5.

Don't want to hijack the op, but I'd be interested (genuinely!) to know which bits.

Clash of Empires was specifically written to try to be a successor to WAB2 that fixed the less popular 'issues'. I've never played it though, so I don't know if it worked or not.

Yeah, but hey ho!

I don't really want to dwell on the negatives of the whole sorry story.
Agreed plenty of worthy successors out there too.

Just seeing who was still playing, and if anyone could give me some reminders of the changes that took place?

Cheers

I just got a used copy of the Age of Arthur supplement yesterday. I basically wanted it for the army lists and scenarios and I found it relatively inexpensive in the US and had my mom send it to me. Looking through it though, it seems to me that WAB had some neat things like characters for your leaders. I've read some negative things about that aspect of the game, people not liking it, etc. But it seemed like a neat idea to me, in theory at least.

I also liked the idea of individually based models that can be placed on walls, in buildings, etc.

Unfortunately, it's no longer played, if it ever was, here in Germany. And I can't seem to find a copy of the old game itself. There is a local club in Erfurt that I intend to play at once we get settled from our move but looking at the web site, it seems they are playing a lot of Warhammer, KoW, X-Wing Fighter, Firestorm Armada, Dust, and Bolt Action. Not a lot of interest in the ancient era judging from their webpage but there are a few SAGA players.

I may be able to get some SAGA players interested in 28mm dark age/ancients and I thought Hail Caesar would be the way to go since it is also available in German.

I do have a question concerning WAB and Clash of Empires. As Clash of Empires is a successor to WAB as Cubs said, would the WAB supplements Fall of the West and Age of Arthur be compatible with CoE or are there enough changes that a lot of tweaking is required?

No sorry that wouldn't work I'm afraid.
You would need to CoE supplement. But your in look.
Plenty of players still have them on there shelves!

I quite like most of the successor rules, but like I said I'm stuck with WAB2 for now.

If playing WAB 2.0, I'd recommend sticking to the army lists in Armies of Antiquity 2, as some of the rule changes in WAB 2.0 buggered up the supplement lists a bit. I found that playing WAB 2.0 with AoAnt 2 worked well as they were designed to go together. We ran a couple of events in Peterborough doing that and they were great fun.

AoA 2 is the one WAB 2.0 book that I hadn't managed to buy while they were available...

We have a small group who still play WAB2 in Rochester NY. Everyone liked the changes and had no desire to go back to WAB1.5 (aka WHFB).

We also managed to get a copy of the unreleased Chariot Wars 2 so we can play those also with the new point cost system.
