Teeny tiny islands.Welcome to my big blue hole.
« on: October 05, 2017, 09:47:06 PM »
Well my gaming group really enjoyed Pirates of the spanish main, and I really enjoy making tiny landscape models...

So I got some plastic, some milliput, a handful of drawing pins, a sponge and a piece of slate and set to work!
Sculpting wise these take a few minutes, the trees are a pain but I decided to use the same method I used for my scarrif table as it works fro very small scale tree .

one done so far, two awaiting trees and I have enough milliput left for at least one more.

Enjoy! And if you feel like you want some then drop me a message and I'll happily spend my evenings making more tiny trees for your small scale pleasure.

Very nice, but you may want to take it easy with the dexterous skill that's needed. Those bruises are going to show for weeks!

Cheers chaps!

Von lucky, that's just the price I must pay. Each island is skillfully punched Into existence from granite!

(I have no idea where the pink on my thumb is from.)

These are ace - I'm (maybe) going to embark on a wee 3mm project soon... any chance of a guide? Do you form the shapes then use the granite to make the texture?

Cheers.
I'll be making some more tonight so I'll write up a little tutorial. I actually use a piece of slate for the texture. I wet it and press it into wet milliput.

It's surprising how well a chunk of rock (whatever sort, I've used a chunk of broken concrete lately) can leave a plausible texture on any base material. I've used it on pink extruded polystyrene, after rough cutting it with a hobby knife. I'm sure it's even more effective on green stuff.

Indeed. I've found that certain stones scale better than others. Slate for example is perfect for cliffs because it forms in layers with can produce mini strata lines.

Nice work and a very enjoyable palette used in their painting. I would love to see your board when they are deployed.

Cheers!

I haven't got a board as such, but here they are on a quick ocean texture print out in the lightbox.
All 3 have now been given trees and i have a couple of bigger ones ready to get started on on the workbench.
I also blacked in the cave on the leftmost island to make it more obvious.

Hopefully I can get enough done for a game on Tuesday!

Gosh, I haven't played POTSM for years... It's a great game. I've still got thousands of the ships, cards and tokens somewhere...

I made up some islands too. Will see if I can dig them out and take a picture  :)

Nice job Nic-e

I introduced my game group to it for the first time last week and it caught on very well. Oddly enough they'd never heard of it !
If by any chance you have a ten mast ship you want to part with I'll happily take it off your hands... lol

10 mast? Wow!
I think I stopped collecting after the 5th or 6th expansion. It started getting silly with the super-ships and creatures with magical powers...
But the original two or three sets made for a brilliant game. My friends and I played it exhaustively almost every week - sometimes several times a week - for about two years solid. Then got a bit bored with it. Then never played it again!  lol
