28mm Hairy Orcs..what's out there?
« on: 07 December 2017, 10:03:52 PM »
Ok so reading a few threads on this board its clear everyone has a different idea what makes a good orc and I'll admit to being partial to the later incarnations of the D&D orc basically a an ugly hirsute humanoid with maybe a bit of ape or boar going on. One of the main features or this type of orc is hair yet most 28mm orcs are hairless. A quick search for "hairy orcs" bought up some rather eye opening results :o but.. err not what I was looking for. So far I've found these old Copplestone Grenadier half orcs which are pretty close (a few more tusks would be good) but the range is a bit limited

http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=fantasy-2528mm-half-orc

are there any other 28/32mm orcs out there in a similar style with hair?

ta in advance Jon

Moved as requested.

I can't think of any orcs with a head of hair... seems like Nick Lund's Grenadier hobgoblins and goblins had some though. I suppose those are at Mirlton now too.

The brand-new Oathmark goblins (very Tolkien-esque orcs) have hair.

If you're prepared to look at older ranges, some of Citadel's C15 armoured orcs have hair and beards. I've bought many on eBay for about £3 a figure or less; there are a lot of them out there.

In the same vein, the Aly Morrison hobgoblins have plenty of hair and make very good orcs. Lots of them are kicking around on eBay. Ditto the Perry and Lund hobgoblins.

Nick Lund's Grenadier orcs - still available from Mirliton - typically have hair, albeit generally cropped close.

The Armalion or something carried by RPE might suit. Tricky to find decent painted photos but I found this which gives a nice impression I think

Hobgoblin, do the Asgard/Viking Forge miniatures have hair?  I seem to remember they do.  I like the heavy-metal look of the Mirliton goblins.

Good 'n' hairy I'd say. Asgard are my favourite orcs. http://www.thevikingforge.net/25mm-fantasy-orcs.html

Thanks for the suggestions everyone still no quite what I was hoping for the faces are a little to goblin like (bearing in mind in D&D goblins and orcs are distinct races rather than Tolkien were they are the same thing) but thanks for taking the time to provide suggestions.

A couple more ideas of what I'm looking for these are all OOP WOTC miniatures

Easy solution.

Get one normal orc.
Liberally splatter with glue.
Apply static grass.

Result: one hairy orc. :D
If you are into green orcs you can even use standard coloured static grass! lol

I wonder if frostgrave plastic barbarians with orc heads might work for you :)

Oooh! On a more serious note, what about Stonehaven half orcs?

Or 15mm ogres
https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=15mm+ogres+trolls&rlz=1C1CHZL_enNZ755NZ755&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjw6oXGgI3YAhVGGZQKHU_rAhQQsAQIJg&biw=1242&bih=579#imgrc=LftbVN-YKCWAEM:

I think you nailed it  :D They really have the modern D&D orc look I like. The slight down side is they are a bit pricey for army building could be some good character models for an army though

Cheers.
