A Storm of Soviets
« on: 20 December 2017, 07:14:39 PM »
Have been toying with the idea of doing a force of soviets for quite some time, after watching the movie White Tiger. It's rather a strange movie, but I love the landscape of the forest and village.

So a trio of weeks ago, bought a box of warlords winter soviets and siberians and started kit bashing. These are some of what I did. The paints I used are Foundry and GW base & washes.

Hope you like them :D

Magnificent! Full of character and energy!
Now listen to me you benighted muckers. We're going to teach you soldiering. The world's noblest profession. When we're done with you, you'll be able to slaughter your enemies like civilized men.

Maxim machine gun team and commissar ready. For the commissar haven't painted the coat lapels and collar insignia yet - too many conflicting sources from the web and haven't pin-pointed the right one

The commissar is no different from the other officers of his military unit, except the star on his sleeve. But megaphone - absolutely unnecessary details.

Sleeve insignia of political leaders of all ranks (from sergeant to general)

Commissars (political instructors) in infantry units. The color of the strip on the cap and the buttonholes on the collar is crimson.

Commissars in units of the NKVD (internal troops). The color of the strip on the cap and the buttonholes on the collar is a maroon.

Commissar of the artillery unit (uniform for areas with hot climates - Caucasus, Central Asia). The color stripes on the cap and the tabs on the collar - black (buttonholes - with red piping).

By the way, in 1943 (together with the introduction of shoulder straps) the position of the commissioner was abolished and, accordingly, these signs disappeared.  Your officer has shoulder straps, which means he should not have any special differences on the uniform. And the buttonholes on the overcoat began to look like this:

Beautifully done.
And in this scale, plenty accurate enough. The buttonholes are wrong? Does it really matter? They have just the right look, which surely is the main thing  :)

The main things are the blue trousers and the cap although not all pictures of commissars show these features. If you can see the star on the arm at that scale great 😁

The megaphone is obviously so he can be heard over the sound of the maxim firing 😉

Blue trousers and a colored cap were worn by all the Soviet officers in everyday form.
The commissars shouted into the megaphone, overcoming the sound of machine guns, only in Hollywood films  lol
In reality, they could only shout at a rally in the rear. In battle, they acted as an ordinary deputy commander of the unit.
