my (ongoing) resolution to clear the decks of all but that which I have a realistic expectation of ever enjoying.

I did a massive amount of that last year, do it you'll feel a weight has been lifted from you!

The best resolution anyone can make is to enlist in the Build Something Competition 2018, of course - the theme is 'ill-advised' and you can register here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=106220.msg1323593#msg1323593, rules and discussion are here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=106236.0  ;)

And after that shameless  :D plug here are my modelling resolutions:
1) no more shameless plugs
2) build something for BSC (even though as coordinator I will not officially take part) (I think I'm already violating resolution 1!)
3) focus on projects in hand - in particular on the boards I am building; on Necromunda; and on finally completing my small Norse warband for OGAM.
4) not making resolutions I cannot keep

In the spirit of (4) I tried to keep it simple. We'll see how that goes...

I hope to wrap up my Army 2017 project in January then move on to building terrain.  I have accumulated a lot of 40K buildings and industrial kits over the last year.  I want to assemble and paint these this year which should give me a lot of practice with my airbrush as well.

I shall remain vague on how many kits I will complete next year.

I started with a .... PS4! Believe it or not, the missus bought me one for Crimbo and I felt crushed by the guilt of the expense, on something that if I'm honest, I'll probably never play. The shoot-em-up games aren't my thing, I much prefer the strategic games on the PC. I had to have an extremely guilty and embarrassed conversation with her and it's going back. I feel awful now ... but she wants to visit Vegas with the girls this year, so I'll put the money into her piggy bank for that instead.

Yeah, I'm ditching the hobby dust gatherers in the New Year on here, all priced to go, so hopefully I can pass that burden on to others who might actually get some use from them.

Here is my provisional 5 year schedule:

In 2018 I will be concentrating on finishing a few projects: 15mm US and German WWII finished. 15mm SYW Prussians and French based, 15mm DBA finished and rebased, 28mm Late War Germans and Konflict 47 finished, 28mm ACW added to and The Walking Dead painted up. 1/600 ACW Naval completed.

2019 will see: 15mm Indian Mutiny finished, 28 mm FIW painted, 28mm Pulp painted, 28mm Early War British, Dad's Army and EW Germans painted, 28mm Dux Britaniarum painted.

2020, 28mm Saxons and Vikings for Saga 2, 28mm SYW British and French painted, Finish 28mm Cowboys. 28mm Falschirmjager and British Paratroops.

2021 28mm ECW Royalist and Parliament Forces. 28mm WWI Mesopotamian Turks and British. 28mm Congo Forces.

2022 28mm French and Prussian Napoleonics. 28mm Test of Honour Samurai. 25mm The Hobbit Figures.

None of which would require me to buy a single figure.

Yes, totally in agreement with these sentiments. I hope I can get rid of some more stuff this year, either sell or give away to someone who will actually use it. Finding like-minded local wargamers to regularly connect with, play games & generally enthuse over the hobby with is just not happening for me. I have become much more of a painter & collector these days.
For 2018 I would like to be able to keep on painting for myself + commissions. I want to focus my personal painting on Dark Ages & Middle Earth - which have some handy crossovers. I'm still hanging onto my 20mm WW2 collection, but it's hard to get motivated to paint more of it without the prospect of any games...
Hoping not to buy more figures until I make a significant dent in the unpainted lot.

Sell off all the rogue trader/old hammer/failed projects, paint up the stuff I have done and (gasp!) maybe actually play a game!

1. Finish a Draculas America gang.

2. Settle on a range and make up a small Frostgrave: GA crew

3. Paint up my napoleonic stuff.

4. Finish off my congo white man expedition force.

For 2018 my most important resolution is to buy no new miniatures until the whole lead mountain is painted. Yes, it will be hard, but it has to be done.  ;D

  • Building a nice gaming table for our Blood Eagle presentation (28mm). This will give me the opportunity to learn something about using snow, frozen water and stuff like that.
  • Completing, playing and publishing my fantasy campaign for Pulp Alley (28mm).

Happy new year to you all!

1. finish the Ottoman division to proper playing condition - not the minimum it is now
2. get the ship Hermione and pirate boats into playing condition and engage dirty Spaniards with my noble buccaneers
- add more buccaneers, civilians and maroons
3. try to keep painting batches small enough to finish
4. keep the painting area empty enough to enjoy painting

My two fixed objectives are:-

  • Get enough 28mm Byzantines painted for an initial Swordpoint game
  • Get enough 28mm SYW Russians painted for an initial Honours of War game

More generally I must try to resist the new and shiny and although LAF and other forums are great wargaming places I need to spend less time on them and more time painting.

1. Finish my Painting WW2 Germans book - actually I should have finished and handed in the manuscript by Christmas but still getting the last details right.

2. Update the old Mick Farnworth Painting Guides on Artizan and Crusader with paints that are available now (some still recommend old Citadel colours).

3. Hopefully, promote the book through a Facebook Group and other activities.

4. Start book 2 - maybe....

I'm caught in the moral dilemma of how long the unwanted presents from (well meaning) family need to sit on the shelf before I can decently flog them off. I hate when they buy me modelling things and I ask them every year not to do it ... but they do.

This is in direct opposition to my (ongoing) resolution to clear the decks of all but that which I have a realistic expectation of ever enjoying.

Cubs, I would love it if someone bought me modelling or gaming stuff! My exwife deliberately would never do anything that would contribute to "The Madness"
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

Many years ago I made one New Year's Resolution.  And I have kept it ever since.

It was ...

Never make a New Year's Resolution!

The problem is, what I like/want/need is quite tightly defined. My wonderful well-meaning family usually just makes a stab at something they think will be useful. For the third year running, my brother bought me a thing with clamping hands and a magnifying glass.

Several years ago I was given one of those.  The magnifying glass is long gone but I use it a lot for holding parts together while glue sets (along with Lego supports).  I have found it very useful and it is now way past its best ut is still most useful.
