LAF wargames CRUISE!
« on: 06 January 2018, 12:13:43 AM »
Its -10 degrees here in NY and I have fantasies of escape!  Where do I go?

How about a 7 day "WARGAMES THEME" cruise in the Caribbean Islands with nothing to do but play games and mingle at the bar with LAFers from all over the globe?

LAF should book this event and I will be the first to sign up! :-*

Sounds like a rather good idea...probably beyond my funding though!

It's going to be 41°C+ (105°F+) in many parts of Australia today - give me the details of this Alaska cruise you speak of. In the past I have thought about having a cruise on a smaller charter boat with a nice naval game(s) with a few people. One day!

Has anyone here wargamed on a boat or ship before?

I've played boardgames aboard before.

The trick is finding a suitable space for them! DBA might work but 6x4 would've pushed it to the limit of space on that particular vessel.

Last time I went on a cruise around the Caribbean we experienced a force nine gale. I'm not sure how the figures would react to that when they're on the tabletop. lol

A lovely idea though. ;) :)

it was 42o C (107F) here yesterday. Hot enough for ya?

I hear Sydney is due for 47C tomorrow. Holy shit that's terrifying, anything over 25C and I start to wilt.

Same here!

Of course where *I* am it's -40C instead.

But that's more tolerable for me than +40C.

Well, the Wastes of Outer Canuckistan are expected to be frozen, right?

I'd like to have some of that, but our winter is crap and even Spain has more snow than we do. I'm sad. :'(

I can arrange a cruise to Tallinn, though. Takes just two hours and it's a pure battle zone to begin with. lol

BTW it is record breaking high summer temps year after year and it is getting worse not better. The stark reality of inconvenient truths.

A stable genius told me it's fake though, so that's fine.

Given that the demographics for wargaming and cruise ship passengers significantly overlap (white, elderly, mostly anglophone, with a need for regular hours and a predictable feeding schedule) then why not? It might even be commercially viable. Shuffleboard anyone?

Oh and in answer to the question, I think the last time anyone tried was 1983, aboard the Achille Lauro*. It ended badly.

* I travelled on the Achille Lauro as a small child, I suspect to a greater or lesser extent every trip ended badly, which she conclusively demonstrated by burning to the waterline and sinking off Somalia.

I mentioned this brilliant cruise idea to my wife... to which she immediately replied  "well you're going alone!"... so I guess I got that going for me
