Gender Equity and the Living Dead
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:12:57 PM »
I was painting zeds the other day when I suddenly realized something. There are hardly any females among the undead hordes. My collection now numbers over a hundred minis from several makers, and only 22% are women. Is this just a coincidence? A deliberate choice by the manufacturers or artists? Some sort of subconscious bias? I don't presume to have the answers, but I do find the questions interesting.

I ramble on at great length about the subject in a blog post. I'd be interested in hearing anybody else's thoughts on the issue.

Well, the zombie ladies are home cooking brains for their errant boyfriends?  :D
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://tistaminis.com/

I guess it has to do with the traditional female role in horror stories - as the victims.

From a non gender-studied point of view (and being a little sexist): who would want to see them???

It is an interesting question.
I personally would like to see a lot more variation in Zombie miniatures. A good zombie horde should be a reflection of society with a good mix of genders, age, race etc.
With my own collection I tend to be an "Equal Opportunities" employer, using convrsions for any short-falls.
I have had people say that my zombie mother and baby are in bad taste aswell as my zed in a wheelchair!!

Interesting that all the zeds in the new WGF set are male.........

Like I said on your site, we're already about half and half. Maybe we should look into a pack or two of child or disabled zombies. :)

Funny topic. :) Why would any minority complain about being left out in a zombie plague? I don't hear many making having that gripe about the current swine pox.

That's mostly for practical reasons (interchangeability), they still have a listing for female zombies:
