There are lots of Ospreys and similar, but the best one I've come across is in the Brasseys History of Uniforms series, 'The English Civil War'. It's a large format hardback, not too thick, but stuffed full of excellent detail based on lots of documentary evidence, and what gear actually survives from the period, as well as the more usual 'what we know from re-enactment'.
It's out of print at the moment, but fairly easy to pick up second hand - although not cheap. But def the one volume I'd recommend.

Well, I will be using them for gaming once I've finished painting the entire collection. Roundabout 250 figures all told - most of which have been pictured here along the way... It's a project which has taken about 18 months so far, without much time for anything else. But I'm on the home straight, then I shall start using them in anger

Ah, thanks Ray. That's kind of you to say so, even in jest. 
I knew very well that I was going to get stuffed when I reached Tom Weiss's vikings. Tom knows how to paint and photograph those boys for maximum advantage, and he's a master of his craft.

I shall simply have to raise my game...

I've almost had enough of them. It's got to the chore stage now - but I am determined to finish them before moving onto cavemen, merchant sailors, aliens, more Elizabethans, Glory of The Sun, more F&IW highlanders... sigh. It never ends
