Over the years this project has had two false starts, and it's been a couple of months since I've posted an update. June was was spent dealing with a difficult family issue, but July was spent painting. Below is a record of my progress. As you can see, I ended up using LBM transfers for most of the shields. I'm thinking about saving the Rodge shields for my Levy.

This photo was taken using my old iPhone so the quality isn't great. Once I find the time and inclination, I'll take unit photos using a proper camera and lighting. I started painting the female unit of Warriors last night. I may hold off on proper photography until after that unit is painted..

I played a test game with my Pagan Rus against Joms in late May or early June, and my second test game against Goths last week. It'll take me a few more games to figure out the exact build that I want to take to the B.C. tournament at the end of September. I'm still on the fence including a unit of Levy, and trying to figure out the right balance of Hearthguard to Warriors. The tournament includes both Age of Vikings and Age of Invasions, so I need to be mindful of playing against warbands from both books.

It's taken me 7 years and a few iterations of this warband to finally putt paint on my Pagan Rus models; which shall also be used as Jomsvikings.

This afternoon I wrapped up the last two shield maiden models, which means I now have a fully painted 6-point Rus warband: Warlord (Oleg), 2.5 points of HG, and 3.5 points of Warriors. By recruiting from my Warriors 2 of the more impressive models, I can field 3 pts HG and 3 pts Warriors.

The banners and shield designs are LBM transfers, mostly Jomsviking transfers.

Here's Oleg and 1 pt of Hearthguard. Its not a good angle, but if you look closely at the horse skull, you will see the adder that kills Oleg.  And since Oleg's myth involves a pagan priest foretelling Oleg's death, I had to add one to my ranks of my Hearthguard.

Below is the remaining 1.5 points of Hearthguard.

Below are 3.5 points of Warriors. To easily distinguish between the two male units, one is modeled holding swords and the other is wielding axes.

I still have to paint some special terrain pieces for the display board, 3 objective markers, and 4 Saga ability markers (3 for PR and 1 for Joms), a unit of Jav levy, my Joms warlord, and likely a unit of Warriors armed with heavy weapons. As such, I still have plenty to do to get ready for the late September AoV/AoI tournament in Langley, BC.

I always forget to tell you just how fantastic your stuff is.  It's always inspirational and I love the new Pagan Rus warband.

Those minis are very nicely painted: their faces especially stand out exceptionally well

Thanks everyone. Photography isn’t my forte. As such, IRL the blues are deeper and richer. Same for the reds.

The LBM shield and banner transfers are nice, but their color tends to be faded. As such, after coat with matt varnish to take away the shiny finish, once dry, I carefully paint over some of the sections with a very thinned down coat of marching paint. This makes the colors on the shields a bit deeper and less faded.

I plan to reuse the display board that I used for my AoI Romans, minus the aqueduct of course. Also, I'll likely replace the white flowers with yellow flowers.

As a historically themed wargame, SAGA frees players to assemble historically accurate warbands, experiment with non or semi historical ideas and themes (like my Mordred themed Britons), and everything in between.

To emphasize my Rus warband's paganism and semi-mythic theme, I want to include a scenery that reinforces this idea. In a way, I like to think of my SAGA warbands more as caricatures of their historical counterparts, rather than as attempts at accurate reproductions.

I just submitted a special order to MTM Printworks for the following scenery pieces. I found the STLs on MyMiniFactory. The designer is Crippled God Foundry.
