Sometimes I come to the end of a commission and go to take the photos for the customer, but the weather conditions are such that the lighting in the studio are awful and no amount of rearranging the lights will improve the situation. Thus it was with my last batch of C-series Thieves for Richard 'Orclord' Hale, but I knew he was also itching to get his toys as quickly as possible, so I snapped some substandard images to let him see what was coming and posted them off. As luck would have it, one of the models was holding a flaming torch and required a bit of OSL to get it right. The dodgy lighting actually helped! So, I won't show the rest of the batch, but he at least may be displayed.

I like the torch effect, but having seen example of your work
dodgy lighting would not diminish their impact.

Lovely stuff  :-* :-* :-*

As mush as I adore all those old GW miniatures, and would love to paint up one (maybe every week), I do find the prices astounding. Still, that takes nothing away from your brushwork.

Oh hell, you can get 'em for £5 to £10. I like getting batches of oddments and sorting through.

A quick project (ha!) that I decided to do inbetween paying work, just for fun. Of course it ended up being not so quick and not so fun. I always loved the Citadel 'Oriental Heroes' figures back in the 80's (pre-slotta of course) and coveted my brother's collection, but the idea of painting all those fancy colours and patterns was too much for me. Plus, if I'm honest, I've never managed to maintain a huge interest in medieval Japanese stuff. But since I found some cheap on eBay I thought I'd give it a whirl. Yeesh. Who knows if I'll ever summon the courage or patience for another, but here's the first (possibly the last). I decided to post him here instead of the historical section because he very much fits into the 'Old Citadel Nostalgia' bracket and we only ever used them as 'Men of the Orient' in our Warhammer Fantasy 1st/2nd edition games.

That looks bostin.

All that trim and detailing would give my old eyes a workout but I think you pulled it off magnificently.

Was it just that or was there another problem that spoiled your enjoyment of painting him?

Lovely work. The Oriental figures are lovely, but very time consuming to do them justice.
Think that one is a Bryan Ansell sculpt?
Alot of the later ones were Aly Morrison sculpts I believe

I'm not familiar with Samurai stuff at all, so I had no idea what it was I was painting, which bits were what and what colour they could/should be. I've got the old Osprey book, but the armour styles are all over the place and festooned with fiddly decoration. I had a thought to try him with loads of different colours, but caved and plumped for blue, grey, yellow and gold in the end.

Yeah, I think I spotted his signature on the bottom of the base. I don't like the Aly Morrison ones as much, because the slotta-bases introduced odd wide-leg stances and they don't have the same appeal for me.

Here's another Samurai. Now, back in the 80's, I don't remember any of these guys coming with a back banner, but this fella definitely had a little fitting on his back to take one. So I made a simple one from a plastic spear with notches cut so they can sit nicely at a right angle, with a paper flag. I find them really tricky to paint and they're a big time-well so although I do have a third one, I think I'm going to take a break from them for a bit.
