Finally finished a first unit, been distracted by both illness and other little projects. Uniforms are of course not historical for this time period, but I do like to have my forces a bit more coherent. To that end I have picked out red and blue as my primary colours, supported by brown and gray. As these are levy their colours are very muted, the warriors will be a bit brighter and the hearthguard even more so.

For the bases, I mixed up a custom blend of Geek Gaming Pine Forest Floor, Krautcover Kodama Woods and some leaf scatter from Green Stuff World.

What do you think?

I like them too. While it is true that uniforms were not used, I like the limited colour palette you used. It isn’t over-regular but will still help a bit to  identify the unit during game play. The bases do look good. Do you do anything to use the basing mix, such as place the larger bits before adding the finer mix, or do you just put the glue down and dunk the base in the mix? I’ve never used a premix like that, so I’m curious.

Thanks mate! I was converted to the gospel of the base mix last year, and you can see it used on my Rhudaur and Rohan in the fantasy thread, plus the Britons and late medievals here. As you can see on last page, I glue down any large items such as twigs, rocks, sculpted details and paint them during the painting stage. I then paint the base itself dark brown just so there is no risk of light colours shining through. Put a layer of glue on the base (strongly recommend Geek Gaming's basing glue, it flows well, grabs well and dries quick compared to PVA) and then just dunk the base in the mix. Shake of excess. If you want, you can seal them. Geek Gaming sell a specific sealing glue as well, but I usually don't bother with more then my spray varnish.

Posting mostly just for documentation, another 8 germanic warriors built. Starting to do a bit more kitbashing with the kits now, and will probably have to do a good bit more cutting and fixing on the next lot. Managed to fit a viking head and a head in full aventail from the armoured saxons on these.

They do have bags of character.
I just wish they’d render the fur a bit differently. And tone down the exaggerated folds in the tunics.
But overall, very tempting. (Except I already have a metal early Saxon army  lol)

Seconded... I still love the kits though.  :D
