The first entry has some great colours and shading, but I feel that they are a bit too shiny. Otherwise a great entry. The second entry is very well painted, muted colours and shading. The one figure reminds me of Mr. Cobblepott (AKA The penguin). What figures are they???

Thanks OrcTrader. I thought I knew it but your paint scheme was so interesting, I looked at it and did not see the figure. o_o

Greetings

the Duelists are great. Colorful, well painted, telling a story. I will even take this pic as a reference about how to paint my swashbucklers. I voted Harold Loyd though. Mainly -as it was already pointed out- because of the glossy finish. The shine just "broke" the illusion. Sorry about that.

Good job on both entries though.
Thank you

The duellists etc are not actually gloss, it's the camera flash that has created a gloss-look. I really need to improve my photograph techniques!! Maybe next week!!!

It could be your matt varnish.  Many leave a slight sheen that will reflect a lot of light that, though not very noticeable to the eye will be picked up by a camera.  Especially with flash photography.  Flash should really be avoided.  If you don't already have some lights this is what I use.

Lights.
Two cheap desk lamps with 30W (150W equivalent) Daylight 6400k Helix Compact Fluorescent bulbs. And my painting lamp with an 11W "Daylight" bulb. This is over the subject with the two desk lamps either side.

(Not that I, personally, mind the "gloss" look.)

Great figures by the way.  Excellent use of colour.  What make(s) are they?

Indeed it's a shame that the wonderful painting of the first entry seems a bit overshadowed by the somewhat vague photography. Painting-wise it's hard for me to choose already but Orctraders photography is just superb 8)

Thanks Orctrader- I will use your technique for the last two rounds. They are actually Foundry miniatures but they seem to have a lot of character which is generally missing from Foundry miniatures. I think that they are great and have found other figures in the Foundry ranges made by the same sculptor. Have loved your figures and painting through this great contest!

I'll check out the foundry range.  Like them all in your photo but especially the very rich ladies and the boy with the hoop.
