300DPI is high end glossy art mag resolution. (no idea about this next bit just an educated guess) I think you will find most home printers top out at 300dpi anyway.

Most are capable of far higher than 300dpi - my three year old very basic HP Deskjet will go all the way up to 1200dpi, and it's nothing special as far as inkjets go!

I do signage at 600dpi usually, although as Surv said, 300 is usually acceptable. Using good paper helps; cheap office-grade stuff doesn't hold ink as well as slightly heavier papers or light card.

No access to a colour laser currently, although I'd really like one for a sheetful of colour signs and posters I've been accumulating! Inkjet printouts run or smudge when damp or wet, which makes weathering and glue more difficult. You can get nice results with dry pastel dust weathering, though.

Printers have been 4800dpi for a few years now.
Though scanner resolution though is not up that high, not even close.   :-)

300 DPI will do the job fine. 700 DPI is like using an atom bomb to open a beer

I did some at 300 and found them a little to pixelly still... these are lovely and smooth...

The 4800dpi is maybe for preset fonts in laser printers? Don't know for sure but those are usually awfully sharp (much sharper than images on a normal black and white laser printer).

The 4800dpi settings is the standard on the HP Deskjet printers. There Photoret III or IV resolutions have been this way for some years now. Epson. Kodak and Canon and the other main stream printers have been right there along. Though a straight black print laserjet will have a much lower dpi, in the range of 600dpi, give or take. :-)
