Olaf the Wasteland Wrestler
« on: 13 June 2009, 07:06:45 PM »

Olaf "the Hammer" was a top billing wrestler in sports entertainment, fighting and winning the W.W.E.H.C.E (World Wrestling Extreme Harcore Championship Entertainment) top titles an astounding 26 times in a row (most of the younger contestants had been drafted) when the resource war* erupted across the American continent. With the genereal breakdown of law, order and goverment, he found himself out of work and displaced like many Americans.

Now Olaf wanders the wasteland, his trusty stageshow hammer reinforced and with him at all times, often offering his services as a strongman or providing settlements with shows for food or money.

* The resource war was a period towards the end of Non Nuclear World War 3 (NNWW3) when the Neo Soviet Empire (Formerly Russia, the Peoples Republic of China, Unified Korea, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Mongolia and Cuba) invaded the United Coalition (Formerly the USA, Canada and Mexico in an attempt to seize and secure the remaining natural resources as well as the UC's mass of nuclear reactors. The war itself lasted three years and ended with the complete collapse of the UC administration.
This however was not a victory for the Neo Sov forces, as they themselves had been ground into the floor, with no reinforcements and no chance to return home the surviing forces could do nothing but attempt to secure holdings in the America's. In some cases they were succesful, in others they were driven out into the sea.

Now for the boring bit. Olaf here is a mini I picked up from the Orcsnest in 2007, but not having much use for a fantasy barbarian, i painted him in tattered jeans, so there.

Nice. Whats 3:16? Biblical reference? Time for a tea-break??
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

No idea what 3:16 means except Stone Cold Austin used to have it on his wrestling gear  lol

As for the mini, its from OrcNests own range I think, but they dont list that range on the web site, so they may be OOP  :o

Austin 3:16 says "I just kicked your ass".

It's from Austin mocking Jake the Snake's use of biblical quotes.  :)

It used to get held up at football matches as well. It's John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only son that whoever should believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (NIV)

I don't know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Thanks Capthugeca! I remember people holding that up during football (thats soccer to our American friends), though I still don't know why they did.

It's because to generally evangelical (generally equated with meaning conservative) Christians it is seen as being the linchpinch of the Christian faith. As a Christian (and a pastor) I've yet to understand why they do it too. They seem to think its self-explanatory, which it isn't, as most people will read and think 'well ok, fair enough' and think nothing more of it.

I am not sure that I would equate the two. I am comfortable being the first but I doubt people would describe me as the latter.

as a Christian (and a pastor)
You too, huh?

I've yet to understand why they do it
I think that it's because some Christians accept the fact that Jesus called them to "Make disciples of all peoples" (Matthew 28:19) and so make an effort to evangelise (share the good news of what God has done for them) but probably haven't got the courage to do it in a more meaningful way.

PS Did anyone notice my Freudian slip in my first post? I've amended it but myincubliss still quotes the original.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say something a little political.  Those signs are very, very, common at American sports events probably because we have a whole different level of Christian evangelical etremeism.  Those John 3:16 signs have always reminded me a bit of people who talk really loud to people who don't speak the same language as if that's going to help.  To those folks the signs make perfect sense and they don't understand why you don't get it but if they hold them up often enough they think some day you will.

I think that you are so right.

I was only talking this morning on this. We have a son on the Autistic Spectrum. His condition and that of others with ASD have taught me a lot about faith and people in general.
The way we have to relate to him is by entering his understanding of the world but so often the system tries to cram him into their understanding. Down the centuries the Church has often tried to do the same.

BTW if you want to be blown away, try watching this video called "In My Language" but make sure to watch the whole thing:
