Afrika Korps Colors
« on: July 17, 2009, 10:54:14 PM »
A while back I posed some questions about "The right color green" for Afrika Korps.  Everyone was very helpful, and I was able to produce my first batch of experimental Germans.  And here there are.

There are many, non-historical, reasons for the color decisions.  For example, the shorts are a sort of mustard-yellow, because that seemed to look pretty good with the (to me) unbelievable faded green of the jackets.

On the other hand, one of the Bengalis sent me this link, with some very helpful color suggestions.
http://www.artizandesigns.com/painting-guides.php
It's collection of PDFfiles, each about 1 page long.  However, it actually uses Vallejo bottle numbers when suggesting colors.  AND... the file for the Afrika Korps makes mention of the 3 different style uniforms; 1.) Early (to me) unbelievable green, 2.) Later pale yellow-khaki, 3.) Very late, anything they could get their hands on.

Now I just need to start repainting all the other figures, to match my original Tunisian dreams.

I like your style MW.  8)

Nice work on the Brigade Games "Ends of the earth" range.

I've these figures stored away to do them justice one day with some paint. So Ii's nice to see some here.

Cheers,

Helen
Best wishes,
Helen

Not bad, there's some variation in colours which is a good thing. I particularly like the one with the rifle in the wife-beater and shorts. Cool pose and garb. Who makes these minis? I'll have to buy the pack for that one and put the rest up on the Bazaar lol.

Thught that I'd add a bit about paint colors.
I started off using the FOW suggestions.  So the general uniform color was Vallejo 'Russian Uniform # 924' lightened with white.  This gives a pale, sort of unbelievable color that, later to my surprise, rather nicely matches the early uniform color from in the PDF link that I mentioned earlier.  However, to me, it just didn't seem North African enough.  So I mixed in a bit of burnt-yellow, and sort of liked that.
I then found a cheap doll paint, 'Delta Ceramcoat: Timberline Green,' that seems to have my prefered shade of yellow already mixed in.
But the secret, to my mind, is the dry brushing after the figure is finished.  My favorite color for North African dry brushing is Vallejo Stone Grey #884.  It's a sort of light khaki.  I'd run out of this and was trying a cheap doll paint that is exactly the same color.  But it wasn't working.  I'd assumed that this was because I'd picked the wrong shade, but it's actually the coverage of the paint, not the color.  When I finally got a new bottle of good ole #884 and then used it... VOILA!  It pops up the jackets & hats to a color that somehow exactly matches the color prints in the Osprey books, etc.
Thought that I'd pass it along.
Regards,
MW

I'm almost finished with my 2nd experimental batch of riflemen.
I think I like the uniform colors a bit better with these, but I appear to have forgotten the color mix that I used for the "Been In The Sun a Long Time and Now Are Very Tanned" flesh tones.  So I'll have to try repainting that.
Wish me luck!
