Are you using a specific subset of Sharp Practice for the period, or just DIY?

Great to see coverage of what seems a very overlooked conflict imo.

I am rather befuddled why thats the case, lots written about, especially the seige and assault of the alamo which happened twice, first the Texians attacking and Mexicans defending, then in true wargame style switched it round.

Lovers of AWI, you've ragged band of revolutionarys with a kind of uniform but mostly Sunday Best wearing outfit and some help by a foriegn power from across the border.

Napoleonics, the Grand Army of the Napoleon of the West.

And very overlooked, even scope for some Naval Wargaming with the Lone Star Navy V Mexican Fleet.

More than one grand epic film and series covering it, for inspiration to keep a project from flagging.


But if I could ask for some help to check a few things.

I've picked up Texicana (Volume 1), and when the Mexicans sent a force to recover the Gonzales cannon they were comprised of Dragoons, but there seems little description of the unfiorm of the Dragoons, or is Dragoons simply another way of saying Light Cavalry?


Also, has anyone wargammed the Naval conflicts and is there a good ruleset for the Brig and Frigate sized actions with Steam Power, which is I belive notable in its own right as a the singular conflict in which a Fleet under Sail defeated (at least in part) a Steam Powered Navy.

Thé Mexican regular cavalry are often described as dragoon’s, but in reality comprised light cavalry armed with Lance and or carbine. They did most of their fighting on horseback and were skilled lancers. Probably some of Santa Anna’s better troops. Their uniform is red tunic with green facings and a dragoon style helmet with horsehair comb which probably leads to the confusion. There were no heavy cavalry present in the 1836 campaign.

The only other mounted troops in the Mexican army were the Presidial garrisons, These were mostly used as scouting cavalry (as was the regular cavalry) and were dressed in blue tunic and wide brimmed, black Spanish style hats. These were also Lance and carbine armed.

The Texas revolution is in my opinion a very overlooked conflict,  The Alamo overshadows just about every engagement in the war (which is brief to say the least) and I don’t think many people look beyond that. It is ideally suited to war gaming with the relatively small numbers involved in just about every battle. There is the siege of San Antonio, Colonel Fannin forming a square at Coleto  Creek, Houston’s victory at San Jacinto and many smaller engagements that are perfect for large skirmish games...
