Hello All,

Here is a shot of some companions that just got off the boat and charging in a horde of Orcs!

I wanted a cool command unit for my Southern Gondor reinforcements.  In my reading I am convinced that Aragon and Legolas would be in mail shirts at the battle of Pelennor fields.  Still, I searched through my fantasy collection to find 3 suitable figures that easily stood out to represent the three classic hero's; Aragon, Legolas, and Gimli.  I was happy with these selections to lead the charge. They are each unique and I even found a Elven figure with twin blades.

These come from splintered Light ranges.

Thank you and please enjoy

For those who have seen my 15mm Grim dark Sci-fi thread on LAF would see how I enjoy the One Page Rules system.  For my fantasy projects I wanted a more regimented game.  I like flanks, support, and such. I got a copy of the Midgard rules and gave them a try.  The Midgard website has an excellent army builder that is very easy to use. With that the LOTR rings figures were assembled.  A mission from Gondor was assembled to counter an orc incursion.  This force was graced with two powerful units of knights.  There were 4 units of spears, one unit of archers, and a one group of rangers (skirmishers).  The orc warband was a large collection of orc warriors (six), with some skirmishers, and two units of wolf riders.  Both armies had 3 heroes.  The two armies meant in a wide-open field.

Here is the full report.

Thoughts on the rules:

I liked the rules.  It feels like a mix of DBA and Dragon Rampant.  I like how supports work and the hero interaction can be fun.

I would say the game favors getting stuck in vs waiting to be charged.  While the re-roll of ones is nice, the real advantage is denying your enemies the ability to earn reputation tokens.  If your heroes charge in and lock down enemy units, it denies the same bonus to your opponent.  It creates a mini game inside the game of reputation management.

The only “slow” aspect of the game was related to maneuvering.  A unit will generally go forward and if they destroy the enemy, it will take a turn or two to get them back into the fight.  I also had one situation where because a unit was in the killing zone it forced me to turn face, but I could not charge after facing the enemy with my 2nd move.  I may tweak that.

I discovered one question.  When a Hero or a unit has a bonus in hitting, like Brutal or Thunderous charge, does that benefit extend to the unit, or hero, they are with? I rolled separate dice for them, but I was not sure.

Thanks for reading.

Great looking figures and I enjoyed your game report! It sounds like I have a similar experience with Midgard - just played one game so far. I liked it a lot. I didn’t encounter the issues with movement, but I think that is due to the deployment in the game I played- neither side achieved a breakthrough and needed to change direction before the reputation tokens decided the victor, so no reorientation happened.

I will be interested to hear any additional insights you have after some more games.

looks great! Ive been playing Midgard on a near weekly basis since its launch, and very much enjoying it. I think your observations are bang-on. I have found the movement rules to get easier over time

In regards to your question, I think you keep the regular dice and the brutal/thunderous charge dice apart. If the hero has the bonus and you buy more combat dice with mighty deeds, those extra dice have the bonus as well. If the unit with the bonus is the target of "today we fight to win" those extra combat dice would also have the bonus

It's sounding like there will be a campaign supplement in the near future

Brillant models! I’ve been struck by the Midgard bug, too, and have spent the last few months with building suitable bases.

Yours look tremendously good. Did you do those sabots yourself?

Thank you DivasMal for the kind words.

My infantry are on .75" bases and cavalry are on 1".  I had LITKO create custom sabot bases for ease of movement.  They are 3.5" wide.  4 infantry or 3 cav per base.

Hello All,

I wanted to create a Undead vs Empire campaign setting.  Where Necromancers raise armies to threaten the living.  I got started on the Undead horde with lots of skeleton spearmen for the ranks.  Below is the first batch.

I am using Ral Partha Europe's Demonworld line.  The are good quality and a good scale.  They also have to benefit of being one piece models so I won't have to worry about spears or shields.

Enjoy

Shiny!

The Ral Partha line was formerly sold as Demonworld and was created by the great Werner Klocke. It’s one of the few ranges out theree without any scale creep and consistant quality. Good choice!

Hello,

These boney guys sure paint up fast.  The Skeleton army continues to expand with two additional units of archers and one of footmen.  This completes the core units and now I will move to elite foot and cavalry.  All models are demonworld line.

Very zoomed in.

Some additional detail of the Spearmen.

Thank you
