1950s Soviet camouflage patterns
« on: September 10, 2020, 05:13:54 AM »
Although I know most of the Soviet uniforms in the 1950s mirror those they wore in WW2, this paint job has me asking what the authority is for this camo scheme? Is it fanciful?  Anyone recognize it and know where there are descriptions and color plates?

Yes, it's fanciful.

If you want illustrations of various Soviet era camo patterns , you can try here:

Alternatively, the Osprey on Soviet Paras has some decent colour plates but IIRC the camo patterns illustrated in the plates are either of WW2 era in amoeba pattern suits or the later '60s era KLMK patterns.

There's a book by Iso Galago publications by Borsarello and Lassus.

That's quite good for that. They are interesting though. There's also another book, I'd have to check my library for the exact title though, which has a wide selection of colour shots.

The other book is "Brassey's Book of Camouflage" which even has a few pages dedicated to patterns in large spreads, so you can study the forms and colours used!  :)

Thank you Freaky Fenton. If nothing else, you've also saved me countless crazy hours trying to hunt down that "fanciful" Russian para camo paint job.

Suppose this comes close to it. The movie is called Red Dawn, if you need a specific name and can't find it in the books I've mentioned, get a screenshot and do a google image search.

After Watching Danger-5 again, I am suddenly, but perhaps not surprisingly, channeling an inner, never ending 1930s-1980s Pulp, Weird War, Spy-Fi, gaming desire. And Lo and behold, 1950s figures are suddenly in demand.

I suppose I could always do a Red Dawn set and just use them for any Pulp game period.

These seem nice:

Not 'made up' just 'speculative' - you could always do the very light grey blotches on olive green which would not be a million miles from this...

Nope, the man who painted them has already said “completely made up”. No speculation required, yours or mine.

Is this strong orange color on this WW2 amoeba pattern real?

I wouldn't have thought so. As the actors/ models have a somewhat boiled look . All of them have skin tones that are way too red. So its likely the picture has had filters applied.
I'm affraid my info only goes back as far as '59. Even then It's not a complete coverage of all branches.
