War in Afghanistan Battle Report. Most the American troops began the battle holed up in the secure compound to the south of the runway, when automatic gunfire was heard in the airport terminal building. The Ranger Captain subsequently decided to begin the evacuation immediately, as the situation was only likely to get worse.
