Four pound mallet held at arms lenth over the selected AFV and then released from two feet or more would do the trick.

The modern equivalent of the old parachutist mechanism where you place a series of paper chits representing the paras onto a steel ruler, turn it over at a pre-determined height allowing them to float down, thereby simulating dispersion.

I will admit my suggestion for a four pound hammer would provide a more definitive and visually alarming outcome than that probably required.

My first Wargaming oppo, Steven O'Leary used this against his younger brother. The game had his Germans against his brother's British.
The Brits defended a river which was crossed by an Airfix Pontoon Bridge. The attack stalled, so Steve (aka Oscar) unleashed his Fallschirmjäger
(All conversions as Airfix had yet to release theirs

) Squares of paper were duly cut up & dropped. Pandemonium! Paratroopers went everywhere!
Behind the other German troops, on the bridge, in the river and two VERY unlucky souls right in front of a British trench. Much fun.

I recall it from one of the Frank Chadwick games, probably Command (in)Decision. The height of the drop was determined by the training level of the transport crews. The better the training level, the lower the drop and thus the less dispersion. The bits of paper that landed face down (they were all marked with type and unit ID) were given a penalty of a hit chit or some such thing. It always struck me as a fun and fairly cool mechanic to influence such things.

It was pointed out somewhere that the use of aircon or fans by an opponent to artificially influence matters was decidedly unsporting.

I remember a WW I trench game that some friends from Toledo, OH, ran. To simulate the inaccuracy of the pre-attack bombardment, the attackers were given a handful of cotton balls. They could throw them, one at a time, at the enemy trenches from a certain distance.

I once served under a bloke who had formerly been in charge of a divisional location battery (counter battery radars). The prick couldn't find his own way to the officers' mess without assistance, which was odd as that's where he was most frequently to be found.
