I totally agree, having become a total convert to 3D printed terrain. There are some superb 3D printed models out there, some as ready made, others as kits. Often as not they aren't that much more expensive than an MDF equivalent, particularly when you factor in shipping. They require less work and other resources to make them table worthy and on the whole beat the piss and pick handles out of MDF for detail.
I will still use the occasional MDF building where appropriate and I like to scatchbuild the odd one myself but overall these are the best solution for most settings. The cost of adding a suitable texture to MDF, adding realistic roofing, adding details like gutters, drain pipes etc, usually isn't insubstantial as is the time spent hiding various tabs and corner joints.
