Dwarf Ballista - UD 27/12 the GW metal ballista
« on: 15 December 2020, 05:55:52 PM »
Edit: Title changed as discussion has moved on from the original question

I’m contemplating the GW Dwarf Ballista .... does anyone know if the two minis are metal or resin? The blurb suggests resin but I want to be sure.

PS I have asked GW but no reply as yet

For £18 I want metal minis!

It’d be for Dragon Rampant but using the Field Gun stats from The Pikeman's Lament

Neldoreth has some suggestions for kit bashing crew and scratch building the ballista - he didn’t like the price much either.

I have a couple of the original bolt throwers and they're much nicer than this ball bearing flinger :D

I have no idea what I paid for them back in the day, but it was a lot less than £18 - and they came with a crew of three.

Good luck with your search, but that new one just does nothing for me (them being resin really doesn't help)

lol TBH I do like the idea of being able to fling iron balls at big beasts and defensive structures. It won’t be core part of my Dwarf army, just an option for when the scenario suits

SI, I’m glad the link was useful. Neldoreth has lots of good articles on his site! I think if I were to scratch build a ballista along the lines of what he did, the main difference would be to use plastic card rather than balsa wood, as I find it more durable in the long run.

Hopefully you can find/make a ballista and crew you like!

I’m sure I will, thanks PM. I’ve got a Ballista coming (cheers Akula!) that will provide the basis of the weapon. Now to find the donor minis.  8)

I second that! Except perhaps "useful" is the wrong word as I don't really have a use for a Ballista, but the guide is clear and it looks cool so I might try and build one just for fun!

Psst, Aventine just released a ballista for their early Byzantines that you can buy separately for £3:

Though I think I could make my own if pressed, there is no doubt it would cost me more than £3 worth of my own labor!  lol
