28mm Crusader Castle

Who needs a 4ft x 2ft Crusader Castle, Yarkshire Gamer of course ! Big Games with lots of toys, it's what we do.

I've done a video review of the castle to give you an idea about the model and putting it together, plus the usual raft of pics on the blog post link.

I think it looks great as is, but I would like to paint it up to look like the Crac des Chevalier in Syria, any terrain builders out there with any tips on how to get that effect.

That’s an impressive beast! In its raw state it looks pretty good so should paint up nicely.

I used rattle cans of artists spray acrylic paint to get a cream stone on my castle.

I used a car primer grey undercoat then a light splotchy coat of liquitex raw sienna 5 then a zenith top coat of raw sienna 7. 



If you went 1 lighter on both shades it would probably be closer to that very light almost white stone

I still need to add the green lichen

It is the Renedra plastic castle so is textured so you get more out of the zenith highlighting.  Is there any texture in the mdf laser cut mortar lines?

Very little, I'm afraid, might need to look at these new texture rollers.

Textured paint? DIY shops sell it in spray cans. Otherwise you could think of it as an appropriately shaped blank canvas and cover it with textured card in the stone colour of your choice. Just like any other MDF building really.  Of course given the size of your castle that’s unlikely to be cheap given the typical price of said sheets in your average model railway shop.

Rather than trying to cover the whole of the outside with textured card, you could just look to do randomly placed clumps of 3-4 stones. These will break up the overall flatness.

Textured paint on top of this might be good, to give something to dry brush on to. Or you could just paint s the highlights on.

That’s a great castle. I got the Foreign legion fort from the same company which is a substantial piece of kit. Very impressed
